No Brace Face

girl trio okie
It's occurred to me that I haven't documented a monumental event with one of the OctaKids.

4 of 8.

She is now braces free.

Four kids ortho down. Four kids to ortho go.

Mike and I never had braces. But we have spawned kids who seem to be single minded in supporting our local orthodontist.

So here's to straight teeth and no more ortho payments for a little while.

And to 4 of 8's new look...

OctaMen Trio

3 of 8 okie
Nothing like some wide open spaces and a tee box to inspire the men of the OctaTribe to let me snap some pics. That's 3 of 8. He goes to sleep at night and wakes up in the morning about an inch taller.

And then repeats the process again.

And again.

All told, he's grown at least 4 or 5 inches this summer. Seriously.

5 of 8 okie

And here's 5 of 8, my aspiring Gene Kelly. He's been very concerned this week that he has missed so many of his dance classes. They are working on their competition pieces. And he's got work to do. And jumps to learn. And steps to make.

8 of 8 okie

Rounding out the trio is 8 of 8. Of whom I cannot seem to get an in-focus picture unless he's making some very strange face. So I edit things up a bit for him, throwing on a little texture, blowing out the colors.

But come to think of it, he's actually a little blurry in real life. Since he's moving. All the time. All.The.Time.

Yea. A blurry picture of 8 of 8 really may be the most realistic...

Sooner Still

six okie

Yep.

Still on Sooner Soil.

Here's your daily transmission update.

Still broken.

When's the fix date?

You know.

Soon.

There have been plane flights and cancelled meetings and rearranged speaking schedules and late emails and cancelled practices and all the rest. Mike flew back south earlier in the week.

And I am juggling work and kids and homeschool and race training schedule, all while awaiting transmission updates.

Updates which all seem to be the same in their verbiage.

Soon.

We are loving our unexpected vacation. Tonight the six kids that are here with me were up for a little golf course photo shoot, being remarkably easy about posing for the camera and putting up with my general Canon nonsense.

Except for 8 of 8, of course. He's not camera shy.

He's just camera goofy.

For example...

8of8 okie

I turned his shirt inside-out so his chocolate stains wouldn't be so obvious. But the seams are. But I think goofy face distracts from the garment issues.

Right?

This seemed like a cute idea...

okie six group

But 8 of 8 looked pained. So we tried again...

okie group set 2

...which gave 6 of 8 an opportunity to ham it up....and for 3 of 8 to stick a blade of grass in his mouth...

There are some more pics to share, but I have to take advantage of the wifi signal at my folks house to catch up on work and emails.

And I should probably check up on the transmission for the van.

Like there's gonna be some new info...other than soon.

This is the Best....

You cannot even imagine how giggly and delighted I was to find this picture today at my in-laws...

Really giggly...

And really delighted...

This has got to be one of the best family portraits ever.

Ever.

And not just because I love each member of the group so dearly.

This just has awesome sauce all over it.

The Uncle Competition

go cart1

My children have three uncles.

Two of them are my brothers.

And one is Mike's sister's husband, CV.

I tell CV that he is my favorite brother-in-law.

(Think about it a minute. I have two brothers. No sisters. Mike has only one sister......hence, I have only one brother-in-law...but he is my favorite.)

There's been something of an unspoken competition all these years, You see, CV has that uncanny ability to choose the perfect Christmas gift for his wife. And Mike and my brothers find themselves scrambling to choose, ah, perfect gifts for their wives. Given CV's perfected gift-picking abilities.

It's the same for Mother's Day. And Valentine's. And any other holiday you can think of.

But my brothers have clung to the idea that they can at least be The Fun Uncles. Fine. Let CV be the perfect husband.

They can be The Fun Uncles.

Until CV got a go cart.

And my children found out.

And were allowed to navigate said go cart.

For a  long long time. And for multiple trips up and down the street. While being regaled with Uncle CV's plans to build a go cart track at the back of his property.

Oh dear.

He has upped the Fun Uncle ante. And my kids are falling for it.

Particularly the ones who are longing for their driver's permits.

But don't worry, Unc. You'll always have Paris with 1 of 8....

Sunday Selah

So the people rested on the seventh day.
Exodus 16:30

I didn't think of a transmission as a means of rest.

But it has become so.

Our brand new transmission in our big ol' van bit the dust mid-week after a long road trip for a wedding.

And so we are waiting for repairs.

This week's activities and commitments are being rescheduled, rearranged and rethought.

And we are sitting, taking a pause, making some reflections.

An unintended vacation in the midst of a very busy season.

A surprise Sabbath.

And I find that it is already rejuvenating and refreshing, a respite unexpected.

There are those Selahs we choose and schedule for.

And then there are the ones that are conferred upon us by cranky transmissions.

And the Lord uses them all.

Selah.

A Recap

I'm not saying that this constitutes a real post. But the last 15 hours have involved one house air conditioning unit failing and then being repaired, one gorgeous, tearful wedding, and a transmission jamming in the van, resulting in a very interesting time in the valet parking line at the wedding with our monster van almost sliding backward down the drive.

We do know how to make an entrance.

And now to bed....

Treasure Chest

It was a unique privilege today to be able to use one of my treasures in a Bible teaching.

A precious privilege.

We are studying Beth Moore's A Woman's Heart God's Dwelling Place, a study on the Tabernacle. Today we began to discuss all the intricacies and details of the Tabernacle and I brought my little treasure chest as an example.

So I thought I would re-post something from a while back, a little ode to my treasure chest....

treasure box1
Can you guess what's under this humble canvas cover?

chest1edit

It's a treasure chest.

This is the doll chifforobe that my grandfather built for my mother during a Christmas in the depths of World War II.

chest4

My grandfather wanted to go fight for his country. He was the right age, in his early twenties. He went down to the military office to sign up. But ultimately he was turned away. One of his legs was significantly shorter than the other, the result of a very bad leg fracture when he was twelve. He and my grandmother weathered the war, pinching pennies, making ends meet.

WW II was beginning to wind to its climactic close the Christmas that my mother was five. My grandparents had scrimped and saved, hoping to give her a wonderful doll.

chest6

She was the Madame Alexander bridesmaid doll. The bride doll was the 'it' item that year, but proved too elusive and expensive for my grandparents' humble budget. My grandmother fashioned her a veil and she debuted Christmas morning, much to my mother's astonishment and delight.

chest7

My grandmother made a gorgeous wardrobe for her, using bits of fabric from worn-out clothes. She stitched, she designed, she delighted.

chest8

The chifforobe and doll were handed down to me when I was a little girl. I played with it all. It seems impossible to me now that such a treasure was entrusted to me, a wondrous play thing, a heritage of make-believe.

chest8

The drawers are full of sweet little slips, skirts, blouses and dresses, hats, scarves and little accessories.

chest11

And hidden away from sight is a little secret. Can you guess what this is?

chest9

Materials were scarce. My grandfather drove a Dr. Pepper truck during the war, delivering carbonated elixir to stores and soda places. He was allowed to keep a few crates and these he dismantled and used the lumber to make the chifforobe.

chest8

I find such a joy in turning over the little drawers and seeing this artwork from the era.

chest10

And when I see 6 of 8, now about the same age as my mother was when she received this gift, when I look at 6 of 8 looking at herself in the oxidized mirror, I am struck that I used to look in the mirror the same way...and my mother probably did too. And my grandfather probably gazed at his own visage as he nailed in the trim work and attached the hinges. And I find myself the owner of a little time machine.

chest13

And the message contained in that little time machine is this: times can be tough. Resources can be scarce. The future can be uncertain. But a parent's love for a child can draw on tremendous creativity. A parent's love for a child can imagine beauty in a Dr. Pepper crate. A parent's love for a child can make a diet of pimento sandwiches taste delicious because it means that child will receive a beautiful doll. A parent's love for a child can stitch rags into ball gowns. Because when it's all said and done, it's not about money and savings accounts and 401K's and mortgages. It's about heart and ingenuity. It's about making do. It's about making Christmas bright, even when times are not.

chest12

And that message is perhaps the most precious gift this little doll cabinet contains.

Chores with Kids

I will post more extensively on this topic when I'm not in the throws of some project prep.

But for now, here is my philosophy on kids and chores...

Um, yes!

Heck yes!

Start 'em young!

And I'll get to some specifics in an upcoming post.

But seriously, the first step is whole heartedly signing on to a philosophy that absolutely expects kids to pitch in...

Sunday Selah

At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
Luke 10:21

7 of 8, singing in the bathtub tonight...

"My God is so big, so strong and so mighty, there's nothing my God cannot do."

Amen, 7 of 8.

May I continue to remember that.

(One of) My Guys

IMG

It was another great night at Girlfriends Night Out.

Complete with photo booth.

Which was a hoot.

A hoot, I tell ya.

3 of 8 tagged along to help out with audio/visual and muscle for me.

He's practically as tall as I am now and seems to morph each morning into more and more of a man.

My guy.

One of my guys.

Swatch

IMG

I've been studying all day for two speaking engagements tomorrow.

So I'm a little punchy.

I'm constructing and re-constructing and de-constructing my Power Points. "They're fine." "No, they're not." "Maybe a different background." "Or not."

So I decided to go for a little distraction, to get the ol' noggin on other topics and gray matter.

That scan of a fabric swatch up there is central to my childhood memory.

That's the fabric of my youth. The fabric that adorned a chair in my childhood bedroom. A chair that had originally belonged to my grandparents and then was requisitioned to our home and re-cushioned in happy yellow flowers on a green background.

With little yellow pom-poms.

I've kept some fabric samples from yesteryear. I love looking back at the colors and patterns that my mother used to draped my childhood bedroom. And my childhood frame.

And this fabric.

It always takes me back.

It's the palette and pattern of kid-times for me, a little burst of sunshine, a little taste of home.

What made up the fabric of your lives back in the day?

Sunday Selah

Ten years.

A decade.

And the words of King David were read today by the American President in the city of New York.

Words that Martin Luther used in the hymn "A Mighty Fortress".

Words that honor and praise the God of Jacob.

Psalm 46.

1 God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.

4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
5 God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.
6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

7 The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

8 Come and see what the LORD has done,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease
to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the shields[d] with fire.
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”

11 The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Selah.

Windows Update, My Hiney

Why haven't I posted today?

Oh, just a little something called an ill-timed windows update...

And one of the kids has found a harmonica upstairs and is serenading the house enddddlessssslyyyyy.

Harmonicas and Silly Putty...they are on the list of Banned Objects at the OctaHouse.

As should be windows updates.

If you'll pardon me, I'm off to find a Tylenol.

And the harmonica player.

And Bill Gates.

Extreme Home Scrape-Over

Guests can now go to the bathroom at my house again. And they don't even need a tetanus booster to do so.

It's a huge victory.

I've painted and scraped and redone and sanitized.

The guest bathroom.

And I will have you know that even after a year and a half, even after thinking I had thoroughly cleaned up one of 8 of 8's more standout creations, I still found Plaster of TP in little smidges at various spots.

Join me, as we revisit a post from February of 2010, chronicling the creative delight of 8 of 8.

And as for the newly made over guest bathroom, I'm keeping it locked until company comes over. For real.

(repost from February 2010)
tp plaster1
So you're thinking to yourself, "That Octa. I emailed/called/texted/Facebooked/im'd/commented her and haven't heard back yet!"

Just know that it's not because I don't love ya.

I've just been solving some housekeeping mysteries, one two-year-old at a time.

tp plaster2

8 of 8 has created a new faux wall treatment...I'm calling it 'Plaster of TP.' The procedure is this; you very, very, very quietly sneak into the guest bathroom while your mother is just on the other side of the wall and you very, very, very quietly dip toilet paper into the toilet and proceed to throw the moist remnants of said paper at the wall. And be sure and get yourself soaked in the process so that your mother knows who the, um, artist is.

tp plaster3

It does bring a unique texture to the space.

Maybe I'll just paint over it.

Yeah, that's it. A nice coat of latex is all this needs.

tp plaster4

So if you've emailed/called/texted/Facebooked/im'd/commented me and haven't heard back yet, just remember, I do love ya.

I've just been a little busy.

Figuring out this latest mystery. Determining who the creative genius behind the Plaster of TP is.

And googling ideas for cleaning up toilet paper blobs.
