Green Beans and the Ham

8of8 ham
It started as a usual Tuesday night
He had no idea it would end up in a fight
But his mother was the veggie-feeding type
And she served him green beans and started his plight.

"No, no," he declared, lips pursed in disgust.
"I won't eat these!" he stated and reach for another bread crust.
"But if you want bread, then eat them you must,"
Countered his mother, all bluster and fluff.

He kept his eyes on her face as he reached for the plate.
Then he lifted the platter and tossed it straight
Straight across the table, sealing his fate
Because the battle was on, she had taken the bait.

8of8 ham2

Green beans were counted and the timer was set
The Ham must consume them fast or regret
That he had declared this tete-a-tete
The seconds ticked on as his bean quota was not met.

Strategy was needed and needed quick
He changed schemes, charming up a bit
A giggle, a smile, a plea for a kiss
Surely she would cave in this avalanche of wit.

ham green beans
But solid she stood, unwavering her stance
And they began the Green Bean dance
"Just four more bites," she would say, giving a tough glance.
"No!" he would reply, his eyes askance.

The evening wore on, all other children fed.
Would this go on until time for bed?
Then the mother tried another option instead
Gathering butter and vanilla, "cookies," she said.

The other children flocked to the kitchen in droves
While the Ham sat at the table with his beans, quite morose
He hadn't foreseen this plot twist, although
He felt honor-bound to continue his bean boasts.

But the wafting smell of chocolate and batter
Stirred up his soul and made the Bean War a matter
Of knowing when one has been beaten with chatter
Of warm chocolate chip cookies served on a platter.

He scrunched up his face and averted his eyes
And picked up four green beans of medium size.
He stuffed them in his mouth, in spite of his taste buds' cries
Because he knew that cookies would be his prize.

8of8 ham3

Some call it bribery, some call it extortion
But his mother knows, whether by crook or distortion
That she won the war, he ate his green bean portion
And he knows that stubbornness won him home-baked confection.

Whatever Happened?.....

...to those giveaway winners?
Well, they're right here, of course!

spin cycle
Congratulations to Crystal Bleu of Just Plain AuD! You're the winner of the JumpStart Get Moving Wii game! I love the title of Crystal's blog--she's an audiologist. How clever is that! And Crystal, maybe that new Wii game will get you all ship-shape for that upcoming triathlon!

And another congrats goes out to Alex Accornero! She's the winner of the newest Jen Hatmaker book, Out of the Spin Cycle. Alex is studying to be a labor and delivery nurse (I have a personal deep affection for labor and delivery RNs, seeing as how I've spent some real quality time with them) and Jen's book is a great resource for all things Mommy!

Ladies, just drop me a line at octamom@octamom.com and we'll get your goodies right out to you!

And, shhhhhh, don't tell anybody, but I've got some great new giveaways coming up shortly. Stay tuned!

In unrelated news, 7 of 8 underwent another therapeutic Botox treatment yesterday and did very well.  She handled the general anesthesia just fine and was a pretty happy little girl the rest of the day--whew!  We're excited to see what further progress we can make with her arm in the upcoming weeks.  Her neurologist was a little more aggressive this time with the injections and also targeted her hand and abducted thumb.  Thanks again for thinking of her and for your prayers.  We're really thrilled with the difference the Botox and continued physical and occupational therapy make!

Well, Thank Goodness For That...

6 of 8a
More deep thoughts from 6 of 8:

"Mom, I'm so glad that LP (one of her BFFs) and me are not total girly girls."

(me) "Oh, yeah?"

(6 of 8) "Yeah. We both love clothes and we love shoes and we love nail polish and we love lip gloss....so that makes us about 10% girly girl..."

(me) "Um, what would make someone totally girly girl? What would take up the other 90% for someone to be a 'total girly girl'?"

(6 of 8, slightly exasperated that she has to walk me through this obvious calculation) "Mom, me and LP like to go outside! Total girly girls don't like to go outside. Thank goodness LP and I like the outside, 'cuz that way we're not total girly girls!"

Yes, well, thank goodness for that....

Sunday Selah

All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth. People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own.
Hebrews 11:13-14
The kolea bird.
It is native to the Pacific region.

Its breeding grounds run from northern Asia to the coasts of Alaska.

And its migratory path takes it all the way down to the region of Australia, with pit stops along the islands dotting the Pacific.

For such a little bird, it travels a mighty way.

It was the ancient Polynesians who watched the nomadic habits of the kolea. They knew it would appear over the Polynesian skies during certain parts of the year heading south.

And they knew in another part of the year they would witness the flocks heading north.

As a sea-faring people, the Polynesians began to track the northward migration of the kolea. It was their assumption that the birds must be stopping to rest on some island chain the Polynesians had yet to discover.

And so, at the northward migration of the kolea each year, a canoe of Polynesian sailors would head out to the spot where the kolea had been spotted the year before and the sailors would wait for the flocks again to appear overhead. And the chase would resume, with the kolea eventually outpacing the paddle strokes of the Polynesians.

Careful observations would be made as to where they lost sight of the birds.

GPS by starlight and horizon.

And this information would be passed on to the next group of sailors.

So it went.

For four hundred years.

Until the day came that the volcanic peaks of Hawaii would appear in the vision of the Polynesian seafarers, the island chain that would become their new home.

Four hundred years.

When we are following the travel paths of the Holy Spirit, His dove-like contrail whispering to our hearts, we head toward a horizon that can seem out of our vision.

But we carry forth.

We may be the sailors in our line that are first generation believers. We jump into our canoes of faith and begin charting the seas of belief, beginning the journey.

We may have the collected observation of a couple generations previous to us. We can sail out to the grounds of their examples, their witness. And we look for signs of Him overhead.

And a fortunate few of us, while still living on this earth, may actually see come to fruition the progress of those who came before us.

We are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, indeed. And when we draw on the Spirit's direction and the discipling of our spiritual mentors, we sail further into the waters of faith.

And make that much more progress for those who come after us.

Until the shores of eternity lap at feet.

Selah.

Laundry...Old School

bathtime1
Creative I can deal with.

Lightning fast I can cope with.

But when these attributes are combined into one entity and then multiplied by two in the synapses of the twins, well, I feel a little behind the eight ball.

Behold my tale of laundry woe.

Nothing Says 'I LOVE YOU' Like...

1of8daddy
This girl loves her daddy.

And he loves her.

They've always had a special bond, being that she is our oldest and was our only for three-and-a-half years.

I remember thinking those days were so hectic and busy with one small child.

I scoff a bit at my younger self now.

Anyway...

Because of their special bond, 1 of 8 really went to a lot of trouble this year in procuring her father's birthday gift.

Quite a bit of trouble.

Because nothing says 'I Love You' like...

Scorpion.

scorpion1
Yes, it's that classic gift of the exoskeleton arachnid variety.

1 of 8 was house sitting for some friends who live on some acreage in the country. We received a phone call one night that was two parts hysteria and one part frantic inexplicable giggles as 1 of 8 recounted her discovery of this scorpion and her successful attempt to capture it.

Once she captured it, she wasn't quite sure what to do with it.

She hates, hates, hates things creepy and crawly but felt slightly uneasy about killing the thing. She watched it charging the perimeter of the overturned glass she had used as its prison. She watched from a distance of four feet or so. She wrestled with the moral demons of scorpion slaughter.

But her plight was resolved when the scorpion went all Jack Kevorkian on her and proceeded to sting itself in the head, thereby committing scorpion Hari-Kari.

scorpion2
Which was awfully nice of it.

So you can imagine how touched Mike was when 1 of 8 offered this prize to her father for his birthday. Along with a box of chocolate Teddy Grahams.

And this card...

Ahhh....

Quite the Hallmark moment, don't you think?

Feeding An Army

IMG_5194
Welcome to Mount Grocery.

It appears in my kitchen every couple of weeks.

Its summit is intimidating, its peak reaching the sky.

And every couple of weeks I must gird my courage and begin the ascent.

'Cuz I am feeding an army here. And Mount Grocery must be conquered for that to happen.

The Botox Verdict

botox1
We head in next week for 7 of 8's second round of Botox to her left arm.

It's that little arm slightly crooked in the above picture.

This time, we're (and by 'we're' I mean the neurologist...) is going to be a bit more agressive and is going to try to coax that little thumb into a more neutral position.

Sunday Selah

I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
John 14:15

kristi

I have a special Father's Day request.

We have some precious friends who have taken the Word of the Lord to heart and have set out to adopt two girls from Uganda.  After overcoming some various challenges, things looked like they were settled and my friends prepared to head home with the girls to their other two children, making them a family of six.

Uganda issued passports for the girls and the Ugandan government gave my friends full adoption of the girls in a time when not many adoptions are being allowed.  The Ugandan government also issued the girls passports.  We were all so thrilled and assumed the hard part was behind us.

Then Russ and Kristi got to our embassy in Uganda to get the girls' visas before flying out.

It seemed like the one easy detail of a long journey.

And yet.

Unfortunately, the US Embassy in Uganda has not issued the visas for the girls.  After days and days of waiting, Russ had to make the tough decision to return to the U.S.A without Kristi and the girls.  Kristi has now been in Uganda for over two months, several weeks with Russ now stateside, waiting upon the US Embassy's decision about the girls' visas.

russ with girls2

So I have a special Selah request today.

Would you please take a Selah pause and pray for Russ and Kristi today, along with their four children?  Their oldest two kids are here in the States with Russ while Kristi is waiting in Uganda with the youngest two.     Please lift up a special prayer that Russ, this father who has chosen to father the orphans, would be reunited with all his children and his precious wife as quickly as possible.  Please pray for favor with the US Embassy in Uganda for visas.  Please pray for strength, wisdom, patience, safety.

You can visit Kristi's blog MomIsThird to read more about their journey and their amazing faith.

Happy Father's Day.

Get Moving!

My affection for JumpStart continues, along with 5 of 8's 'career' as a game reviewer. When JumpStart offered to send us their latest title to review, JumpStart Get Moving Family Fitness for Wii, we jumped at the chance...pun intended.
5 of 8 was immediately thrilled that he could choose a variety of locations to 'exercise' in. His younger sisters were insistent that he explore the castle environment, which he obliged. He loved being able to change up the vistas through which he was moving during the various activities.

5 of 8 quickly decided that speed skating was his hands down favorite and figured out how to use out Wii Fit Board in conjunction with the game. The twins will sit for many a minute watching 5 of 8 navigate through a variety of courses.

In addition to the games themselves, JumpStart Get Moving host Brooke Burke pops on screen from time to time with fitness and nutrition tips, which 5 of 8 has enjoyed learning. As the mama, I like the fact that this information is coming from a favorite activity, spurring interesting conversations about health and fitness. 5 of 8 likes to dazzle me with the knowledge he's picking up along the way.

5 of 8 gives JumpStart Get Moving Family Fitness a solid thumbs up, with one suggestion; he would like an option to work to a fitness level where you can 'earn' a pet to exercise with you.

A-hem.

Oh the irony, since 5 of 8 has two real live dogs that we have to beg him to walk....

And what would an Octa-JumpStart review be without a little video montage to go along with it? 5, 6, 7 and 8 of 8 populated the camera lens for this latest edition of silliness, drama and overacting...all in the name of promoting a great game...

JumpStart Get Moving is available this week in stores for $29.99 and should provide many a moving entertainment for those times this summer when you hear the words, "Mom, I'm bored!"  But get this;  the JumpStart folks are also giving away a copy of the game to one lucky Octamom reader!  So get your typing fingers ready, comment below, Tweet it, FB it, and head to the JumpStart site for more entries!  The winner will be announced on Wednesday, June 23rd!  Good luck!

The Mother Load

spin cycle
You don't want to go it alone in this mothering thing.

Turns out, that when Jesus said that His load was light, not heavy, He was even talking about the mommy duties of laundry.

And toddlers.

And vacuuming.

We often forget to invite Him into the to-do items that make up the fabric of our days as moms. We begin running through our liturgies of chores while suspending our liturgies with Him to a more quiet time, a calmer time.

A time that often doesn't come in the hectic momentum of the day.

Hence, a handy little reminder.

In the form of a devotional book specifically for moms.

Hello, Jen Hatmaker.

Jen is an author, speaker, teacher and, oh yeah, a mom. Her latest book, Out of the Spin Cycle, is a devotional that reminds us to bring Jesus into our every day daily-ness. Through Jen's humor, wisdom and heart, she awakens our mommy sleep-deprived vision to see the holy in the routine habits of our days, to see the sacred in the things that can seem simple or stale.

Like spiritual cucumber slices rejuvenating tired eyes.

Jen writes on those topics that tend to collect in the hampers of our hearts, worry, comparison, marriage issues, discipline. Her fabric softener blend of humor, insight and grace helps infuse new aroma into our robes of righteousness, those robes that can sometimes get a little starchy or dingy. And she somehow does this while making you laugh out loud.

It's a good read, girls.

So to celebrate Jen's latest tome, let's throw a little giveaway, shall we? Head over to this link on Jen's newest book, peruse around, then come back here and post a little comment about those areas in your days where you need refreshing.  Tweet and FB for additional entries.  And to gain yet another entry, head over to Jen's website to see more of her writing and teaching.  The giveaway will close on Tuesday, June 22.

The Bravest Woman in the World...

ranch2
Behold the Bravest Woman in the World.
Or the craziest.

That gorgeous girl there on the left has, in the space of two weeks, accompanied me and my little ducklings on not one but two water outings.

Yep.

My crew and water features.

It makes you feel like a life guard on NoDoze.

NoDoze? You crazy college kids from the '80's remember. NoDoze was the slap-you-upside-the-head with gagillions of milligrams of caffeine per tablet and would make your heart pound and keep you awake for hours and hours while you tried to study for finals while experiencing jitters of a seismic quality.

I scoff at this Red Bull generation.

Back in my day, we knew how to abuse caffeine without red dye #40 and ginseng.

But I digress.

That gorgeous gal in the picture, CB,  is one of my dearest friends and she signed on to host us at her amazing neighborhood water park a couple of weeks ago up in DFW and then invited us to her folks' incredible Hill Country ranch for an afternoon on the river last Friday.

And then she helped me hang on to sunscreen-slippery kids and snacks and potty chairs and toddler fits and all the rest.

She has earned a special crown in Heaven, I just know it.

I'll post pics from our aquatic adventures tomorrow.

But for now, take a moment to reflect.

To reflect on what it takes to recreate with the Octa-clan.

And to reflect on her courage.

Sunday Selah

Now two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him.  One of them said, "My lord, this woman and I live in the same house. I had a baby while she was there with me.  The third day after my child was born, this woman also had a baby. We were alone; there was no one in the house but the two of us.
"During the night this woman's son died because she lay on him.  So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from my side while I your servant was asleep. She put him by her breast and put her dead son by my breast. The next morning, I got up to nurse my son—and he was dead! But when I looked at him closely in the morning light, I saw that it wasn't the son I had borne."

The other woman said, "No! The living one is my son; the dead one is yours."
But the first one insisted, "No! The dead one is yours; the living one is mine." And so they argued before the king.
I Kings 3:16-22

A wise king having to make a wrenching decision.

Having to choose which woman he would believe for the maternity of a baby.

King Solomon.

It's a Bible story that both those who embrace the Scripture as truth and those who see it as fable and myth are equally familiar with.

The proverbial story of the two women who come to Solomon with one living baby between them, each claiming to be the child's mother.

Solomon's solution is stunning. He commands that the living child be split in two by the sword and a half given to each mother.

At which point, the real mother's cry for the sparing of the baby's life reveals the child's true maternity.

There is such genius in Solomon's inquiry, such insight into the human spirit and into the heart of mother love.

God-given wisdom, according to Scripture.

But there's a little detail I had somehow missed all these years, a piece of trivia that I hadn't paid any attention to.

These two women, squabbling over this baby?

I Kings 3:16 says they were prostitutes.

Prostitutes.

Two women living outside the confines of the law, seeking justice from the highest court in the land. Two social outlaws wanting the very system that condemns them to choose between their stories.

I wonder if Solomon took a look at these two 'ladies-of-the-evening' and immediately knew that the one bringing the case must be the true mother. Why else would she risk the consequences of her profession being discovered if not to plead for her child? And what of Solomon, imbued with godly wisdom? Should he have not at first sight of these two simply thrown them into prison and let the fate of the child rest where it may? Was he not supposed to be administering godly justice?

He did.

And all the people of Israel knew it when they heard of the outcome of this case, as recorded in I Kings 3:28.

Because wisdom from God is a beautifully blended elixir of grace and righteousness, decisiveness and devotion and discernment. It doesn't squash the oppressed and it doesn't ignore sin. It somehow infuses the very environment of our falleness with deeper conviction and even deeper hope.

And Solomon was gifted to dispense this kind of judgement.

We typically marvel at his psychological sleight of hand in determining the identity of the real mother of this child. But today I'm marveling that the enormously wealthy king of a peaceful land would bother at all with these two fighting prostitutes. Today I'm marveling that he would take the time to hear their cases, to take the time to understand the cry of a mother's heart and to take the time to restore the child to his rightful mother. Today I'm marveling at the representation of God's wisdom, a wisdom that sees us for what we are and still seeks to make things right.

Solomon's wisdom.

The wisdom of righteousness and grace.

Selah.

Because I only had mounds of laundry to fold, kids to bathe, dinner to make and dishes to wash, it seemed an opportune time for the US Census Bureau to call and chat.
Since I had nothing going on.

A-hem.

Now, I don't necessarily mind the US Census Bureau calling.

Except for this.

I already turned in my census.

ging-gong w-kids1

We're about to wrap up this session of the Summer Grand Tour.
Why is it that I come home from these 'vacations' more tired than when I left?

2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 of 8 have been at MiMi and PaPa camp, that annual extravaganza my in-laws throw up at Grand Lake in Oklahoma for the grandkids ages five and up.

I've been holding Potty Camp for the twins at my parents' house, keeping their washing machine running continually along with draining my stores of patience.

i love god
(repost from June 7, 2009)

Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life~
Deut. 30:19-20

I love God.

It's that simple.

I knew it as a child. I know it still. I love Him.

It's just there, like a song I can't get out of my head.

I love Him.

I love God.

It's that complicated.

When things don't make sense, when that love means I choose a more difficult path, when I swim upstream against the current of the crowd.

Loving Him can make life seem more colorful and also more formidable. Living to please Him complicates my relationship with my self. My self. The self that wants to lead in my own understanding. The self that wants to believe I can guide through my own wisdom.

Loving Him creates a bedrock of faith and gives wings to soar in the soul. Loving Him keeps me grounded and keeps me dreaming. Loving Him answers so many questions and creates so many more. Loving Him means I know my destination but not always my route. Loving Him means I love life and I am willing to lay it down. Loving Him means I venerate the mountains and then in faith tell them to move. Loving Him means loving even those who won't love me back.

I love God.

That is my constant.

And in that being my constant, He changes everything.

Selah.
