And he loves her.
They've always had a special bond, being that she is our oldest and was our only for three-and-a-half years.
I remember thinking those days were so hectic and busy with one small child.
I scoff a bit at my younger self now.
Because of their special bond, 1 of 8 really went to a lot of trouble this year in procuring her father's birthday gift.
Quite a bit of trouble.
Because nothing says 'I Love You' like...
1 of 8 was house sitting for some friends who live on some acreage in the country. We received a phone call one night that was two parts hysteria and one part frantic inexplicable giggles as 1 of 8 recounted her discovery of this scorpion and her successful attempt to capture it.
Once she captured it, she wasn't quite sure what to do with it.
She hates, hates, hates things creepy and crawly but felt slightly uneasy about killing the thing. She watched it charging the perimeter of the overturned glass she had used as its prison. She watched from a distance of four feet or so. She wrestled with the moral demons of scorpion slaughter.
But her plight was resolved when the scorpion went all Jack Kevorkian on her and proceeded to sting itself in the head, thereby committing scorpion Hari-Kari.
So you can imagine how touched Mike was when 1 of 8 offered this prize to her father for his birthday. Along with a box of chocolate Teddy Grahams.
And this card...
