Snack Time

I'm pretty sure that it you put bat guano in individual snack packs, my kids would probably eat it.
Because in their economy, anything pre-packaged into individual bags by the factory has got to be more savory, more delicious, more valuable than those big family size boxes.

But let's run a little financial report on those individual snack packs, shall we?

Okay, okay, I'll leave you alone. You love those little snack packs and I'm going to ruin your mojo.

So let's just put it this way...in a house with eight children, it is not economically feasible to provide each Octamom kid with an individual snack pack for our snack sessions that run throughout the day.

As in, we would be out of house and home in short order if we tried to keep these ravenous hoards in little bits of colorfully printed foil envelopes of Goldfish.

Hence, this system.

I've started making our own snack packs, scooping 1/2 cup measurements of snacking goodness into little snack bags.

And then those little snack bags go into a bin that the kids are allowed to pilfer through and find a 'snack pack' that's meet their palate.

I'm sure some of you had already been using this method at your homes...I'm just a little slow on the uptake. But the kids are thrilled to have their own individual bags...because things just taste better out of your own little baggie.

AMEN Sister. Thank you...this is exactly what I'm saying and I've been saying it for a long time. Love your idea and may I just say that I'm going to shamelessly copy you in this department. I buy in bulk, but my kids will sit down with the entire container of "whatever" and before they know it....Gone!
There must be extra knowledge in having 3 more than 5 because you know all the good stuff that I should know.
Thanks for the idea and info.

Brilliant idea! I used to do this with snacks a few years ago but have gotten out of the habit. Definitely time to revive it!

that is a great idea. I buy in bulk too and I think my kids would love to have their own bags.

I learned this trick a little over a year ago from a dear woman and my kids have loved it. Our snack basket sits on the top of our refrigerator and they get to rummage through it after school and during the weekends for their snacks. It sure helps keep those snacks lasting a little longer than letting them dig through the family size packs themselves.

Excellent idea...and much more healthy if you want my opinion.

My Wordful this week is all about a "Lethal Beauty"...come by and see if you can.

You're a genius Octamom! I think i will have to buy gallon bags for my 14 year old boy's snack bags, though.

I would love to have a quick list of all your snack "options." I'm trying to find healthy snacks (that are also inexpensive).
But basically, for the kids I have goldfish, animal crackers, and off-brand cheeze-its. (And fruit or veggies in the fridge)
And for the hubby, I buy Triscuits, Wheat Thins, and name-brand Cheeze-Its.
I wish I could make some of my own snacks or something, because I feel like the "snack" category eats up so much of our food budget!
Do you make your own/buy in bulk?
Any thoughts?

I could stand to take a few lessons from you. I just ran out of ziplock bags this morning.

Definitely need to try to do a bit more around the house. :)

Ha! So with you!
Phoebe would only eat individually wrapped cheeses, until I took to cutting out shapes from a big blog with cookie cutters - at which point she developed an interest!

Great idea, I used to that when my kids were younger as well.

I bet it also cuts down on fights over "sharing" - a.k.a. "she has more than I do!"
I think I'll have to do this with our frozen peas because several of mine like to snack on them & next thing I knew there was a limp bag of 10 in the drawer. ;)

I do the same. I have just started to do the ones going to school in tiny little plastic lunchboxes. Must be cheaper in the long run, but also a but "greener"

another brilliant octo idea! But then, we always wash and reuse all those little baggies. Do you? Cuz that would take a looooooong time.

and so convenient to grab a already made bag too rather than a large 1 flavored bag
