Play Time

1of8hat1
I was going to delve into some more inquiries from QuestFest...but I got a little distracted by my photography efforts from Memorial Day weekend. We spent a delightful afternoon hiking the lake trails in our amazing city's downtown park, me following our crew, clicking away. While I came away from the afternoon with a memory card full of images, I got to playing with this shot of 1 of 8...and just kept playing and playing and playing...

1 of 8 has a penchant for wearing hats. She loves them and doesn't seem fully dressed without them. This floppy white number has been a long favorite and our little hiking excursion was no excuse to leave the floppy white number at home.

I like seeing 1 of 8 with a letter box frame around her. I like seeing her in a straight shot. I like seeing her in a grainy finish.

...and black and white...

...and softer...

...and closer...

But I suppose the main thing that strikes me in the different versions of this image is that she has become a young woman. It's happened. She has gone from wearing princess crowns and crazy ski hats to creating her own style, her head held high, a Cheshire grin on her face.

And a sense of identity and history in her eyes.

When did all that happen?

  2. She is beautiful regardless of what you do with the photos, but I love the different ways you treated the same picture.
Glad you were able to enjoy the beautiful day we had on Monday. I took the day to do absolutely NOTHING.

  4. ya know? I got the distinct impression that you just plain old like looking at 1 of 8!

I'd love to be a hat person. Unfortunately they just look silly on me... not good in the skin cancer capital of the world :(

I love to do this with my photos too, it's so much fun, kind of a photographic therapy of sorts. I need some more therapy!

  8. I am currently in need of a good floppy white hat. Your daughter is smart.

The irony of life is that this transformation happens right before our eyes and yet we sort-of miss it.

My cousin had a monarch butterfly chrysalis (I still think of it as a cocoon) and she and her children were watching it for a week or more. The butterfly began to emerge slowly and they only blinked, or looked away for a minute, and then suddenly it was completely emerged. They'd missed it. Even though they'd been right there anticipating the change. It pretty much went from cocoon straight to butterfly right before their eyes.

Our kids do that to us too!

  9. Can you be my mom and snap amazing pictures of me? I bet her self confidence is very solid. At her age, I was a hat person too - still have some of them, but I've become self-conscious about wearing them. I hope her adult person-hood never changes from strong, bright, and beautiful. You are doing a fantastic job.
