Monday Musings...Happy Housewifery

Housework is something you do that nobody notices until you don't do it.
~Author Unknown

I changed post content in mid-stream.

But I decided that prompting myself to whining and then encouraging you to do the same would not be keeping it excellent.

So I'm not going to tell you about the muscle in my right shoulder that clenches into a small boulder when I think about my least favorite chore. I won't tell you about the feelings of futility that arise when I finish this chore, only to see it undone within a few moments by the tide of humanity that ripples through the house. I won't regale you with the details of my frustrated demeanor, my injured shrieks, my droning whine as I plead with the kids to stop undoing what has been done.

Nope.

Not gonna do it.

Not even gonna go there.

scrubbing the flo....

Whoa!~

That was close!

Gotta keep a lid on that circumvented quixotic housewife personality...

So instead, I'll tell you about my most favorite chore, the one I had to really think about all day to come up with. Because telling you my favorite seems to be more in keeping with that goal of excellent.

It's a chore that is facilitated by a product that is a recent addition to the housekeeping product market. And I know some of you have concerns about putting this product in the hands of youngsters and yet others of you may have concerns about what ingredients are used to make this product so successful.

But, hey, for today, don't rain on my parade.

I'm trying to think positive here.

So for the big reveal, my most favorite household chore, the one that rises head and shoulders above the toilet scrubbing and the baseboard sweeping and the refrigerator haz-mat removal...beyond all these lies this one happy job.

When I Magic Eraser my walls.

You know, that odd white spongy rectangular thingy with that oddly attractive shaven man with the earring on the box.

Yep.

Pure joy.

First of all, it's the one chore that the kids beg to be a part of...and one I rarely let them participate in. It is the one chore that has such an immediate sense of gratification. One tennis shoe mark under the dining bar...gone. Crayon on the kitchen wall...gone. Various nasal passage products decorating the expanse near a youngster's bed...finito.

Simple. No fumes. Not likely to be undone for at least a day or two.

Simplicity, relative permanence, immediate results.

If only scrubbing the floors was that fulfilling.

Or, you know, whatever chore...not trying to highlight floor scrubbing here....that wouldn't be excellent....

So put on your Pollyanna Housekeeping Hat and share with us the one chore that makes you happy, that singular job that brightens your house and unclouds your day. And if you're one of those who loves, loves, loves scouring and sculling and all that, well, just please be gentle.

Write your own post on this topic and post your name and the url of that post in the Mister Linky's box below or simply leave a comment. Let's be excellent, people!

  1. Once upon a time, I hated to wash dishes. Oh, not when I was 5 years old and, because my mom cut her hand, she "allowed" me to wash a few plates and made me feel all grown up. It's just that the day in, day out, clean the kitchen chore got old quickly. Now, however, I enjoy that time of peace and quiet (you know there aren't too many volunteers to keep you company during this time!) I quite enjoy cleaning and putting away sparkling dishes and reaping the benefit of a nice, uncluttered counter!

  2. I enjoy washing the dishes because I can be doing something far more exciting while that is actually happening, it's the loading and unloading the dishwasher I detest... Same with washing clothes, the machine does a great job. Actually I dont mind loading the machine... not a fan of the rest.

Okay, thinking hard about something I actually enjoy... does "making sure my husband has a warm bed to come to" count as housework? I do enjoy grocery shopping, even when the kids are going feral, I still like it. I like to figure out the best deal, compare sugar and sodium content, all the fun stuff!

  3. I just realised what a mathematician-offspring I sound like. Oh well, I'm in good company, hey rocket-scientist-offspring:)

  4. Other kids leave their nose-pickin's on their bedside wall? And here I thought my little nerd was the only one. Where do they think of that, I wonder? :)

  5. I knew you were talking about Magic Eraser! I love it, too! And wall boogers are endemic here, also...

I enjoy Swiffering my hardwood floors. I feel so tidy when I do it.

  6. wow, thanks for sharing this tip/chore. I have been looking for something to take the crayon off of the walls. I am not ready to repaint so I was trying different cleaning products and they were removing my paint. Thanks for saving the day for me!

  7. I thought for sure it would be cleaning your room. Oh, the times of conflict,'discussion' and all out war that we have had over the years. The thing that comes to mind; however , is you turned out to be 'normal'. Who would have guessed it?

  8. I, too, hate cleaning floors. I blogged about my favorite! :)

  9. I really like ironing. I have no idea why. My son also used to wipe his boogers on the top of his bunk bed. Gross.

  10. My favorite chore is laundry... but NOT putting it away. I have no idea why- but I love the washing and the turning over loads and even the folding... but I despise having to put it away!

Oh! And FYI- I love the Magic Eraser, too, for when you really need it- but be careful and don't ever let your kids use it... it can cause burns. It actually DID happen to my husband when he cleaned out the dryer with it (thanks to our son who left a black crayon in his pocket that went through the wash and dryer). After my husband had rashes/burns all over his hands I looked it up and I guess it's fairly common with the Magic Erasers! True there are no fumes- but the formeldahyde is probably what causes the irritation. Not good stuff.

  11. omg, I love the Magic Eraser. My shower has a textured floor and it was dingy. It was dingy when we moved in and I remember it being dingy when my grandmother lived there. A combination of the magic eraser and scrubbing bubbles deep shower cleaner got it clean. A shear miracle! All the dirty hand prints that Fiance the Mechanic leaves on the walls and doors (I swear, I have a 6'3 toddler) Magic Eraser takes em off. I love it!

  12. I enjoy doing the laundry .. you know, the putting it in, the pushing the buttons, the dumping in of detergent.

    I like that part.

I don't enjoy putting it away .. but we won't talk about that =-)

  13. Excellent post! Hmmm, a household chore I enjoy...Ummm...have to be...nope... definitely not... does yard work count? Yep that's it I love mowing the lawns and shoveling snow. They are jobs with instant results they stay done for awhile, and since they're typically considered 'boy' jobs they make me feel a bit rebellious.

I am with you on the magic sponge thing though, magic indeed.

  14. Easy...folding towels. I save them for the very last as a treat. Yes, this makes me a loser but I'm okay with that. I have to fold them JUST SO and preferably while they are warm so they get all smooth and match perfectly in the linen closet.

    Now I want a Magic Eraser...sigh...

  15. I actually enjoy vacuuming. The picking up before the vacuuming- not so much fun. We have two Labs and dark red carpet. The results of vacuuming are immediately apparent. It's a bit like mowing the lawn.

Magic Erasers are amazing! We love them for everything from getting grime out of the utility sink to wiping crayon off the walls. I hate to imagine what life was like before Magic Eraser. It's nice to hear that other families are reliant on them too!

  16. I agree, my kids LOVE using the magic eraser. They marvel at it the entire time they use it AND the walls are much cleaner afterward. I also dislike cleaning the floor. Because like 2 hours later it still feels cleaner but it looks about the same. Sigh.

  17. Oh the love of the Magic Eraser. Even though I called it a magic sponge for years and several people thought I was referring to birth control, I love that little white rectangle.

  18. When we moved in July, I had marks on my kitchen floor I couldn't get off no matter how hard I tried (I wanted my entire deposit back, so I wanted that place SPOTLESS.) I had an epiphany, went out and bought a Magic Eraser, and it took them right out. Whew! One of life's little mysteries solved!

  19. That is the closest thing to a housekeeping miracle I've ever seen.

Thanks for your kind comment. Certainly, we readers all are blessed by your presence in the blogosphere.

  20. Sweeping/vacuuming...it's like PROZAC or CRACK! Elevates my mood during and after. I'm still high off my Sunday afternoon sweep. Whoa.

LOVE LOVE LOVE laundry too. Be reminded that there are only two people living in this house.

LOATHE LOATHE LOATHE dusting and bathroom counter tops.

  21. I love to vaccum. And not just run the vaccum, but do the corners and the baseboards and under the sofa and on the sofa. Perfect, straight lines on soft fluffy carpet? It IS like a drug. But then, ooooo if someone walks on it? Not excellent. Not excellent at all. . .

  22. Mine would have to be laundry, but I struggle with putting it away???! :) I must say my hubby and I couldn't help but have chuckle about your post! DH is from a big family and we have joked ALOT about floor cleaning...your housekeeping quote is great! :P

  23. oh no, this post was made for me as my husband says I love chores! but honestly today, due to lack of sleep and a sick little one, I am just whining. all day! maybe tomorrow I will post my most favorite and then link back :)

But I do love the magic eraser. But only use it on my stove... obviously, I need to branch out!

  24. I like to run the vacuum. Sure, the floor ends up all nice and clean. But I've found it's the one thing that truly annoys every single entity living in this house: canine, feline and human. Plus, I can't hear the arguing and bickering over the dull roar. I sometimes pull out the vacuum cleaner just so I can get everyone out of my hair.

  25. I hate to vacuum! I hate putting dishes away...I don't mind cleaning them I just hate the drying and putting away. LOL! :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Is it bad to say I don't like any chore? Nope...not a one. vacuuming a little because I love watching all that dirt and the papers get sucked right up into the machine. Other than than that...I hate chores. Every last one of them!

But...when I get my own magic eraser, I will be right there with you!

  27. Great post! Loved it! I love those magic erasers as well. How did our parents survive without them? Now, off to scrub some floors. This time with a smile on my face. :0)

  29. I actually don't mind cleaning.....but, it's a "gives me peace of mind" thing b/c I can't stand clutter or messiness. The chore I dread the most is cleaning showers. Wait.....you didn't ask for that. Oh well. I guess vacuuming is high on my list of chores I like.

  30. OH you always get me laughing! I have to say, I hate house chores, but if I had to pick a favorite, it would be cleaning the kitchen.

  31. Bizarre woman that I am, my excellent chore is cleaning the bathroom...I love the way it sparkles...

    ReplyDelete
  32. I like washing windows. I also love to put laundry in the wash. I get to feel like I'm doing something productive without really doing anything at all.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh! I L-O-V-E the magic erasor. I don't care what's in it or how that little white chunk of magic works...it does and I like it.

BUT...my favorite chore has to be washing dishes. Not the fact so much that I like the action of washing dishes, although I don't mind it. I love the look of my sink when it's all shiny and pretty. I'm weird...I know. :)

    Blessings!

  34. It's nice to be able to find something that will work on everything to keep it clean, isn't it? We had to get away from chemicals a few years ago for health reasons, so we turned to tea tree oil for msot of our crazy Sharpy-on-the-beige-leather-couch stuff. I use tea tree oil everywhere now! :) I love the smell too.

I have a hate/love relationship with my favourite thing. I *hate* washing the dishes, loading the dishwasher, emptying the dishwasher, scrubbing pots, etc... but I *love* it when the kitchen is clean and I know I did it. I so rarely ever completley catch up with the dishes, there are just too many people in the house! {lol} Even 5 minutes after I am done, someone will come to grab a glass of water, or bring down a baby sippy cup from the bedrooms. But, the kitchen is still sparkling clean, minus a few things in the sink.

    I love that feeling. :)

  35. Maybe I'm missing something, but when I use Magic Eraser it just disintegrates in my hand so quickly, I feel like I'm flushing money down the toilet. What's the secret???

    ReplyDelete
  36. HA - I give this chore completely over to the children - hey aren't they the ones who ding up my walls and baseboards and fridge and stove and dishwasher and and and

  37. the magic eraser is simply magic. i'm a believer, too, (and the off-brand generics work just as well.)

    i kinda like to vacuum:)

  38. I'll have to try that magic eraser since I never have and I have some marks I need to get rid of. what do I like to do? Hmmm, make a mess in the kitchen. Hah, I know, that's not what you meant. Oh, I like cleaning..............cleaning the plates off that is :)
