From home to home,
and heart to heart,
From one place to another,
The warmth and joy of Christmas
brings us closer to each other.
~Emily Matthews~
I would love to report that my favorite Christmas carol is something very spiritual. I would love to report a magnificent, worshipful chorus has earned my top spot. I would love to report that a contemplative ballad rings the true meaning of Christmas in my ears. But, no.
My favorite Christmas carol is Silver Bells.
For all the right reasons.
He was still a relatively young man when his heart gave out and he left this world behind. I only remember tiny wisps, really, and even those memories may be placed there by the grainy home movie film images that show him holding me, tossing me in the air. He was my maternal grandfather. And I was his first grandbaby and the only one he met this side of eternity.
His memory still casts a long shadow, almost 40 years later. He was an entrepreneur, an artist, a salesman, a pilot. He gave my mother an incredibly blessed childhood full of his love and mischief and a legacy of an adventuresome spirit. He was a devoted husband to my grandmother. He read, he flew planes, he designed advertising in neon. He lived a very full life in a handful of decades.
And then he was gone.
It's a funny thing, this missing someone you barely knew, someone who played such a huge role in the lives of the people around you. His volume of personality is still just audible in the voiced remembrances of my mother and grandmother. They have made sure that my brothers and I know him, know of his joy of life, know of his daring, know of his crop dusting and funny stories and heart and drive.
And they have made sure we know his favorite Christmas carol.
Which has now become mine.
The song was written by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans and was first recorded in 1951. My grandmother and mother giggle in remembering how my grandfather loved music and could barely sing.
But would sing out this carol in full voice.
I recorded a Christmas album in 1993. The majority of the songs on the album celebrate the story of Jesus's birth and are a compilation of many of the beautiful, traditional songs of the season. But I knew that Silver Bells would be an important piece on that album.
When I sing those words, I'm singing words he sang. When I sing those words, I give voice to his legacy. And when I sing those words, I'm struck with such gratitude that my Savior has provided the way of reunion for all of us, a means to be reunited with those who have gone on before us and the gate by which we are reconciled to God. Silver bells. A carol about the clear sound that reminds us all of a baby and a manger. A song that reminds us of the Christmas message without ever really saying it.
Soon it will be Christmas Day.
For your listening pleasure, I've decided to try a little experiment. My Christmas album was availabe on cassette tape. This was back in the days when CD's were just starting to be available--the Dark Ages, I know. I've transferred my rendition of Silver Bells to a wav file and am including the link http://www.box.net/shared/auiurmli21. You'll have to download the file and then play it on your computer's media player. I hope to have an embedded audio player posted later today, but for now, this will have to do. The resulting quality is not fabulous, but I thought it would be fun. Listen and enjoy!
*(Note-I've added the song in the video box below--)*
And then, come back here and let us know what your favorite Christmas song is and why. Write a post on this topic on your own blog, then enter the url of that post your name in the Mister Linky's box below. Or just give it the ol' comment. What is your heart singing this Christmas?
Impressive .. beautiful voice
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is "Stille Nacht"
"Silent Night" in german .. mom sings it every year at Christmas when the family gathers. I sing it with her.
My favorite Christmas carol is
ReplyDelete"Mary's Boy Child".
I guess, first I really love the beat of that song. Especially Little River Band's rendition.
I like the fact that Man will live forevermore because of Jesus Christ. I like that really really well.
I cannot find a file to download of this song. And forget about finding it on any albums that are out now.
I wish I could have known your grandpa.
Dang, girl. Your voice is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI love so many of them, there's no way that I can choose.
ReplyDeleteYou are amazingly multi-talented--your voice is beautiful. I really enjoyed listening to that. So cool! I can't sing AT.ALL. I get that from my mother who loves to sing in church, and my grandmother (bless her) who knew she couldn't sing, but sang away anyway. She was so sweet and cute about it. My favorite Christmas song? Hmmm hard to pinpoint one, but I will tell you that I love anything by Elvis. His rendition of Silver Bells is lovely too. (I get that from my mother too...)
ReplyDeleteThanks you for sharing your precious memories. :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. I felt like i had just popped a tape in the deck :) ahh, reminisce...
ReplyDeleteUm, favourite...at the moment... today... I cant remember what it's called, its a Relient K one, I love the bit in it "the first time that you opened your eyes did you realise that you would be my saviour and the first breath that left you lips did you know that it would change this world forever" It makes me remember the human baby side of Jesus.
You made me think about it last night and I've been singing it all day:)
Immanuel - God with us!
I didn't listen to the song yet but I will. I had already posted about my favorite Christmas song on my music blog.I put the link in the Mr Linky.I wanted to let you know I grabbed your about me logo to use on my blog for my today's post.It is a meme I joined called Meet My Friends Monday and today I chose you.
ReplyDeleteI just had a listen and man your voice is just lovely.
ReplyDeleteVery lovely.
ReplyDeleteI performed this song for my voice final my freshman year of college. But I don't know that it's my favorite. I have many favorites. It's hard to pick just one. I think different years different carols hit me. For a while it was Cantique de Noel (which is the original O Holy Night. I WAY prefer the French lyrics.) which I have also performed several times in both languages. SOmetimes it has been Silent Night, or Angels We Have Heard on High, or Joy to the World. A choir number called Baby, What You Goin' To Be? is up there. THere is one on our church's Children's Songbook called When Joseph Went to Bethlehem that always makes me cry. Then there is almost anything the Bing Crosby sings. ANd random ones here and there--Thos Oakridge Boys have a great Christmas album--I like the first one--with some favorites on it. OH, and The Christmas Song!!! Again, not overly religious, but I love it.
I could go on. There is honestly too much out there for me to choose.
You are serenading me as I type this comment. You have a beautiful voice, and what a tribute to your grandfather. It sounds like he left quite a legacy for you and your family! He would be quite proud.
ReplyDeleteyou have inspired me to send something to Mina that I have had in my scanner for months thinking "someday I"m gonna scan that and send it to Mina"...today's the day!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for posting a clip of your beautiful voice. Lovely!
ReplyDeleteI'm with Mina on my Christmas song faves changing throughout the years.
When I was 18 I picked out George Winston's Carol of the Bells on piano, so that was a favorite for a long time.
A couple of years ago, I heard a beautiful song (Mary, Did You Know?) sung by one member of a boys choir with a simple piano accompaniment. It was stunning. I've heard other musicians sing it, but my favorite is when a child sings it.
I now have the piano accompaniment, and my girls love to sing it! =)
I want to be you.
ReplyDeleteI Love Silver Bells (one of the first songs I learned to harmonize to when I was little),and Mary Did you Know? but....
Wow, voice, looks, wit, writing ability and you're mom to eight. Amazing-- some ONE must've been a little pushy in the "Talents and Gifts here" line ;-)
My grandfather was similar to yours. I was 2 when he died and he had a huge impression on my brother and others in the family. I feel like I totally missed out on him. My mom once told me I was afraid of all men when I was a baby and wouldn't go to him, but the week he died she leaned down to kiss his cheek and I kissed him too.
ReplyDeleteSilver Bells is one of my favorites too. However, my mom's favorite is "O' Come Emanuel.' I probably spelled that wrong. I'll have to find the spelling if I write a post on it. I wrote a post based on your prompt from last week, but haven't got it up yet. I plan to do so for my Photo Story Friday and will have to link to yours.
My favorite is O Come O Come Emmanuel. Just because it is so beautiful. I should look up the history behind it, to find out if I need to love it even more!
ReplyDeleteSo Beautiful. Great voice. I have talents but not singing. Check out my newest scrapblog.com "I saw God Today". My newest granddaughter was born Nov. 19th. She's precious. This Christmas I'm so grateful to God for all our blessings.....Kids, Grandkids, Flower shop doing great, and friends and family. God is Good.

I love the comment above that said:
ReplyDelete"I want to be you"!!!
You do have a gorgeous voice and it is a beautiful song.
My favourite Christmas song is "So this is Christmas" by John Lennon or I think the correct title is "Happy Christmas (War is Over)".
I especially love the children singing in the background who were from the Harlem Community Choir.
There are several youtube videos featuring these children.
Bless you Octamom
Peggy
Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteYup! No end to your talents! I'm very jealous!
ReplyDeleteMy favourite carol is 'O Little Town of Bethlehem'. My friend who is a music teacher pointed out to me that it's completely interchangeable with 'House of the Rising Sun' by the Animals. Each can be sung to the tune of the other. Try it!
Versatility- I like that in a song!
I like Trisha Yearwoods "It wasn't his Child".
ReplyDeleteHe was her man, she was his wife
And late one winter night
He knelt by her
As she gave birth
But it wasn't his child
It wasn't his child
Yet still he took him as his own
And as he watched him grow
It brought him joy
He loved that boy
But it wasn't his child
It wasn't his child
But like a father
He was strong and kind and good
And I believe he did his best
It wasn't easy for him
But he did all he could
His son was different from the rest
It wasn't his child
It wasn't his child
And when the boy became a man
He took his father's hand
And soon the world all know why
It wasn't his child
It wasn't his child
And like his father
He was strong and kind and good
And I believe he did his best
It wasn't easy for him
But he did all he could
He grew up with his hands in wood
And He died with his hands in wood
He was God's child
He was God's child
He was her man, she was his wife
And late one winter night
He knelt by her
As she gave birth
But it wasn't his child
It was God's child
What a lovely tribute to your grandfather.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite song is The Drummer Boy. And What Child Is This.
The Drummer Boy is my mom's favorite. I think I decided long ago that I love it so we would have something in common, since I trend much closer to my dad. It's funny how those things are.

ReplyDeleteYou are one incredible lady! When I finally got used to your many talents (graphic designer, photographer, writer, mother, knower of scripture...) you add another one to the list.
ReplyDeleteYour voice is absolutely beautiful. I pretend to sound just like that when I'm in the shower or getting something out of the garage. Sadly, great home accoustics can't make up for my lack of vocal talent!
My favorite Christmas song is "O Holy Night." It gives me chills to hear it. My mom's favorite was "The Little Drummer Boy." She passed away in December several years ago, and we played that at her funeral. For fun, I like the sleigh ride song.... "Just hear those sleigh bells jingling, ring-ting-tingling, too...."
Thanks for sharing such a sweet and lovely story about your grandfather. It's wonderful how your family kept his spirit alive for you.
Excuse me for a while. I've got to go find that cape again. Now where is it?
Roban
Now EVERYTIME I see you and we spend time together on the sidelines, you are gonna hafta sing for me. Yep - get ready. :)
ReplyDeleteWow. Is there no end to your talents? I am jealous.
ReplyDeleteI love "It's the Most Wonderful Time, of the year" .... is that really you singing??? WHAT??? Absolutely beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteI think "O Holy Night" is the best song ever written, but this year I'm loving "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" the Casting Crowns version...
ReplyDeleteWow, you are one talented lady! Beautifully sung -- are you saying that you had an album on the market once?
ReplyDeleteI've been in chorus/choir my whole life -- that is, until we moved 3 years ago and I miss it. I'm an alto, but sang tenor most of the time (due to shortage of men.)
Anyway, it was lovely to hear you sing!
(As for my favorite, I'm terrible at narrowing things down to favorites, but I do love "O Come Emmanuel" and "The Carol of the Bells.")
I had written about my favorite Christmas song on Sunday. I actually have a song that I think is fun and have on my player by the Waitresses called Christmas Wrap, but I actually love 12 days of Christmas. When we go to the Nature in Lights, my daughter and I used to try to sing all the words before we passed through all 12 displays. This year wasn't too hard as the traffic was at a standstill in the park. Thanks for sharing your song with us. Merry Christmas - Annemarie
ReplyDeleteWell, I don't have a favorite Christmas song...but I'll take this moment to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a happy new year.
