Card Competitive

Apparently I'm more competitive than I think.

In only one area.

But it is an area in which I insist on the highest level of performance, a standard that must be upheld, regardless of moves and births and Thanksgiving dinner for 40.

The Octamom standard is this:

Christmas cards MUST be mailed out the week of Thanksgiving.

Preferably the Friday before Thanksgiving.

But the Monday of Thanksgiving week is also acceptable.

Which I suppose means it's a bit of a lax standard...but a standard, nonetheless.

As long as we lived closer to extended family who was accustomed to the screaming, sweating, stressful aerobics of an Octamom family photo shoot and was still willing to man the camera for us, we often had numerous rolls of pictures to choose from each year for the Christams card picture.

Now, uh, not so much.

I feel like I just can't torture the neighbors that much....yet.

So a couple of weeks ago, I set the self-timer on the new Canon and forced talked my family into posing for a few pics.

Now, I'm gonna have to make you wait a bit longer for the final product, but some of the process looked like this.....

And this proud portrait...

Everyone was SO cooperative....

We couldn't find 6 of 8 as we got ready to set the camera.

But we should have realized that being a diva takes work....

And yet one more blissful shot...

You put it all together, and it all makes for one pre-Turkey, slightly competitive holiday greeting card extravaganza.

Let the Yuletide begin...

  1. So, are you getting that camera remote for christmas? then you can get them to all say "daddy wears pink undies" and click at just the right time.

Better still you know for sure that the camera isnt going to go off just while you are yelling "if you dont all sit still and pretend you're happy for one more photo no one is getting any turkey" because you have to press the button.

  2. boy how i know that it takes 20 attempts to get just one good looking photo. I may not be the photo queen like you, but I am known to carry around my camera and "shoot away", My Father-in-law thinks I am TOO MUCH and that it is ridiculous to take pictures of, say, your car, that you have so many memories in, being towed away to be scrapped, for example. Everything is a memory, and the in- between shots like these tend to not be as, we will say, beautiful, but they are so fun and MEMORABLE. that is part of the joy of having a camera and capturing life in the moment. I love these. it shows how real your family is, the "cooperation" you put into it, and that you are a family that loves each other and cares to make time to record special times together. that speaks so much. Woman, I am not your child, but I "arise and call you blessed". May Jesus continue to bless your family into and beyond this holiday season, as every day is a day to remember what He has done for us, and how much He loves us!!! Thank you for sharing!!!

  4. I'm trying to come up with a good idea for a Christmas family picture. I only have 3 kids, but I'm so over the studio! I know how that is, too.

I can't wait to see your "good" pic, lol...

  5. Octamom,

I'm posting about Christmas pictures today! We have the same problem, only with four;) LOL Family and friends always get a kick out of the pictures because the kids are never looking at the camera and there's always "comotion" in the picture;) LOL I found some really great ideas to help and have fun with it!

  6. We are alike in this way! Thanks for the laugh!

  7. I haven't sent out our cards either.

  8. I LOVE the pictures! That's what our attempts at family pictures usually look like - and we currently only have 2 children! Can't wait to see the finished product :)

  9. I imagine that getting 10 people, 8 of them children in a good shot is difficult. I have a tough time just getting my twins to pose together and get them both looking AND smiling. We took our holiday card picture at the beach, and somehow got one to work... but we were only half of your group!

  10. haha! thanks for the laugh this morning :) i am dreading our family picture session (but thankfully, we did do a mini one over thanksgiving)!

  11. Hey, just FYI, when I came onto your blog today, I got this following message: "To view this page, you need to log in to area “Restricted Area” on www.blenza.com:80". I can cancel out of it and view your blog, but it's a bit strange. Just wanted to let you know.

  12. I forced my chickies into an hour of photo taking back in July before I finally got one that worked! And usually I have the cards sent out by now, but someone decided that I should write a letter to go along with it this year. So the envelopes are stuffed and sealed, but now I need stamps. I can't wait to see the finished product!

  13. omg, you are my hero. i can't live through a photo shoot with two...

i love this post though, what a great way to remember the silliness that goes on during family pics!

  14. You are amazing!!! 10 people in one photo! I just do the granddaughter and it takes forever to get her to cooperate! Can't wait to see the finished product.

  15. I am thinking of giving up with just a family of 5--seriously it brings out a bad side of me!!!! I just want to scream!!! But then I laugh and give up...never getting a good picture. I think I am settling for kids only this year.

  16. Great pics!! That is going is going to be what mine will look like!! My 3 year old will be naughty, my 6 year old will pose like a model and my 9 year old will do his fake smile where he looks constipated. Good times!!

  17. Great pictures. Merry SITsmas.

  18. Tose are great and I would love to know what bribe you use to get your kids and husband to sit for any picture...together :)

  19. WOW! We have almost the very same pictures of our family! I am usually griting my teeth and trying to stay positive. It is a good thing cards don't have sounds! Some of the cutest cards ARE the ones with the crying kids...but I can never bring myself to send those out.

  20. I'm getting ready to attempt this myself. I'm still trying to get out our Nov. newsletter, my husband is less than cooperative. Then, I can send out the Christmas cards! Of course, I am so disorganized, this may be our first time EVER getting them out on time. (i.e. before Christmas)

  21. It's probably a bad thing that I get mine out like the week of Christmas then?

I only have one child and I'm afraid to even try a Christmas photo.

Can't wait to see the finished product. Love the "take-outs." Uh...wait...that is "out-takes."

Ooops. It's been a long week.

    What? It's only Tuesday?

Well, it's been a long two days.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Ah, but I think those candid "mess-up" photos are the best.

I create artwork for the front of our cards every year, and this year was feeling less than inspired. But I started on a completely unrelated project and it came. So I have my cards ready to print, snapshots on their way from the developers, and a little half-sheet letter that needs more editing. I'm almost there.

    Happy Christmas.

  23. You have some great Calvin shots (as in Calvin & Hobbes). We usually promise the kids that we'll take one purposeful Calvin shot (silly faces) after we first get a decent picture.

After having children, my standard date of getting Christmas cards out has changed. I figure that since the real Christmas season doesn't start until Christmas Day and lasts through the twelve days of Christmas, I'm good as long as I get our cards out before Epiphany!

If we send cards earlier, other members of my husband's family (who are equally challenged with children and time) may even mock us if they haven't sent out their own cards yet. They'd say they're really not Christmas cards--they're Advent cards. Such sticklers. Talk about competitive!

  24. Despite the kooky faces some of them are pulling or the tears that found their way out..man your kids are beautiful ;)
Can't wait to see the finished article :)

    Hugs to you all.x

  25. I just love the second picture. That's one you save and maybe put on a t-shirt for him to wear when he's older.
I am laughing just looking at it.

She's so perfectly posed, looking at the camera expectantly, just knowing this will be a great picture.
Meanwhile, he's doing his best to be the silent sabateur.

The extra leg adds a nice air of mystery too.

Oh you've made my day. :)
    Thanks for sharing.

  26. Wow, I tired just thinking about the coordinating of it all. They are cute though!!!

  27. Makes juggling my three look like a walk in the park! LOL!

  28. so funny and I LOVE the DIVA. That was me over this weekend. We had a photographer come to my in-laws b/c everyone was in town. I, of course, needed to reapply multiple times. All divas must :)

But all in all - looking at your pics, I think you'll be sending a very entertaining Christmas card.

  29. I love, love, love your out-takes!!!!!!

And Christmas cards must be mailed out (at least round one) the day after Thanksgiving. No exceptions :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ah, those scenes are familiar. You are good to get them out so early, too. I'm lucky to get them out by New Years, but I DO get them done (complete with family letter.) It's December -- I'd better get writing!

    ReplyDelete
  31. We did the photos 6 weeks ago? I really need to get up to sears and pick them up, as they were ready 3 weeks ago. Maybe after my Dr appointment Friday, as I will be 3 miles away from sears and not 20.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm totally ahead of you.

    No, I'm not. I lied.

But I LOVE the candid pics. Even on Christmas cards. I love it when people send out ones with pics that are just ridiculous. Looks like you could do that :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Oh my gosh, those are SO funny!!! Love it!! I am proud to say that I've already sent out my Christmas cards, too (the day after Thanksgiving), which is the earliest I have ever gotten them out. We do a letter recapping our family's year and include a collage of pictures of our family (mainly the boys) from the year. We moved in February, and I never got around to sending the change of address notices, so I figured if I wanted a few cards in return this year, I had better beat everyone to the punch.

Apparently, if you and I had exchanged cards this year, you would have mailed it to my old address. =) LOL

  34. I agree with Heather of the EO. Sometimes the candid pics are the best shots. I love these ones!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I give you credit for even trying without calling in professionals. I'm sure you got a perfect shot though and I'm looking forward to your posting it.

  36. Lucky me I've seen the final product and I am always amazed that yours is the first card I receive and everyone looks so great! A Marvel! Love these "other" wonderful shots! Blessings as you prepare for the holiday! Can't wait to see you guys! Oh! and love the new Christmas look! Terrific!

    ReplyDelete
  37. You brave crazy woman!!! Haaa Haaa, I have seen photos on your blog enough to know that the final product will be gorgeous!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I cannot imagine getting one good shot of 8! It took me nearly 400 pictures to ge one half way good shot of 2!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Those are FANTASTIC!! If you really sent me a card with those "realistic" pics, I would so love you. Because that is a card that would stand out from the bunch!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I am sooo not looking forward to taking Christmas pics...so many uncooperative children---and I only have half as many as you do! I am the exact opposite of you...I send out cards when i get one..is that bad or what??

    ReplyDelete
  41. Could be worse. You could get your Christmas picture cards designed all pretty, get them all printed up and start putting them in the envelopes and only then realize that your teenaged son is flipping off the camera (sigh). Talk about back to the drawing board - sheesh!
