Baking by Insanity

"Hey, Octamom," you say. "What's the deal? I've left you comments and it's taken you days to respond. I'm used to you dropping by my blog on a fairly regular basis and you've been a bit spotty. Is there something I should know about?"---(or 'about which I should know?'--y'all are better about watching your dangling participles...)

Well, as a matter of fact, I do have a little project going on.
It's somewhat consuming.

IMG_1421

It's starts a little something like this...

IMG_1420

And then like most of my projects, it seems to grow...

IMG_1423

Before you know it, it's taken on a baking life of its own...

IMG_1445

You might as well know...I have BCD...Baking Compulsive Disorder...

IMG_1437

It's characterized by dreaming up big baking schemes and volunteering to make homemade goodies for the office and neighborhood alike.

IMG_1438

You shouldn't be staring directly into the photographs if you have blood sugar or thyroid issues...the sugar glare will be too much for you...

IMG_1446

Here's why I don't bother posting recipes for y'all...this is what most of mine look like--and let me just tell you, it makes my sister-in-laws, the math teacher, the bio-chemist and the accountant, immediately break out into hives...

IMG_1442

Did you just hear my collective sis-in-law-hood shudder? And my mother is an accountant--she's feeling a little itchy right now...(but I do love the juxtaposition of my recipe card with my label-maker corn starch--I'm complicated like that...)

IMG_1440

And be warned--I'm pulling the next generation into this mania...

IMG_1434

IMG_1433

IMG_1441

So around here, we're pretty much decking every horizontal surface with holly--and I'm not yet adept at typing comments and emails with my elbows, since my fingers are delightfully gloved in flour and butter and sugar...

But never fear, I've kept you close through all the baking...because I have mastered hitting the refresh button with my elbow so I can read your comments...

  1. Wow! SO impressed!
    And loving your kitchen!
I'm desperately trying to fast for advent (which usually involves me trying, and failing, to like soya milk!), so I'm devouring your sugary, baked goodies with my eyes! I bet they contain lots of butter and yummy dairy-stuff as well don't they? Oh yum, yum, yum!

  2. I so need to say this, I want to be you when I grow up :)...wow unbelievable...you need your own show!! Beautiful

  3. My mouth is seriously watering! That looks amazing. Sadly we have yet to bake a single Christmas cookie in this house. Of course that does not mean I haven't eaten my fair share from others! Our baking day is Friday, and I feel the need to take pictures now!

  4. Can I come bake with you? I am currently wondering which of my childless friends wants to come and help me tend to kids, clean my kitchen and bake up a storm this close to christmas. I am assuming it isnt going to happen and I'll be handing out boxes of choc to family instead of home made, beautifully bundled, individual christmas cakes. But I'm not buying the chocs till the last minute, I live in hope!

  12. Look at all of those yummy cookies! My kids would love it if I loved to bake that much! I am sure they would love for you to adopt them!

  13. I will forgive you for not visiting me but only if you send me some of those goodies.YUMMY.....

  14. Oh, the yummy goodness. Hubby enlisted my services to make cookies for Alex's entire boy scout troop and for our Sunday School Christmas pageant. So, my kitchen will be looking a lot like yours for the next few days.

As far as recipes go, I love it when I make something...someone asks me how I made it and I'm like...uh, I don't really remember, I just threw stuff in. :)

  15. I guess I'll forgive you but only if you send some of the sugar my way. Just kidding, my blogging has been drastically reduced with Christmas preparations as well and that is as it should be. Preparing for and spending time with family esp. around the holidays is most important and all that other bloggy stuff can wait.

  16. Oh my goodness... DELICIOUS-NESS!
I believe you've spread your BCD to me too... I have the whole day anyway! hmmm... Should I wait for my sister? Nah, she'll just join in later when she gets home from school. :)

  17. WOW! I tend to stick with the drop cookies even during the holidays. Maybe I should start the cut cookies for Mattie May!

    Great pics.

    I am so hungry now!

  18. And I thought I was good because we went out caroling and delivered EIGHT goodie plates. Now I see my attempts at mass baking and candy making are weak at best.

Now I'll go grab a piece of fudge...

  19. We've been in the same baking land as you, although since I have not yet frosted my cookies (does that sound a little weird?) I suddenly feel like tackling that job. It's okay to just feed the chickies fudge for lunch, right??

  20. Oh, man... I am sooooooo jealous! I had those same visions, my friend. Dreams of making, baking, creating and sharing tons of magical creations. And then I got through 1 batch of peanut butter balls and I was done. For the season. It's all fun and games until your toddlers insist on participating.

  21. Oh wow. I want to make Christmas cookies, but I just haven't done it yet. You're making me feel guilty. :)

Everything looks so wonderful! How do you keep the kids from eating it all? :)

  22. YOU.ARE.AMAZING.

my cookie baking consisted of a roll of dough from wal-mart.

i feel inspired/compelled to write a post of YOU.

    INCRDIBLE. have fun eating!!!

  23. Holy cannoli sugar girl. You have been busy! And it all looks so gooood!!!!! Wish I was your neighbor!

  24. It all looks wonderful! This is my favorite time of the year because we're always elbow deep in one project or another. For the month of December our family is allowed to concentrate solely on projects and we don't worry about some of our regular activities (like cleaning). I just shovel out the living room and kitchen every couple days and we keep crafting! It's so much fun. Your kitchen looks as if your family spends a bit more time on the cleaning :-) What delightful memories you're making!

  25. Wow! All I have managed to do is dip pretzels....(and I have only one 17 year old home still). But those cut-out cookies have put me in the mood to bake! Now I am off to find the cookie cutters!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Those look AMAZING. And the volume! We've started, too, but the kids keep eating 'em up. So more this afternoon (including fudge) and probably a few other days of baking, too. (Thanks to my oldest daughter.)

  27. BTW, I started playing on scrapblog, thanks to your previous post. I even did a few pages. It IS fun. I'll have to experiment more, though. I can definitely see how tempting it could be to switch over. I also may print a page just to see the quality.

  28. We have BCD issues in our household as well. It is a very fattening illness that strikes between November and January in our house. It is not something to take lightly!

  29. So yummy, I love this. Can I come over? Just kidding. I love that you made such wonderful sweets and that the children helped. That is what I want to happen at my house. Lots of love, sugar and celebrating!

  30. Holy cow woman you are a baking machine!! You are excused for not visiting friends, as long as you send us all some of those cookies. :)

  31. lovely! (and I love, love, love your background paper too) And so tasty looking. I am looking forward to next week to do all of my baking with my big girls when they get into town.

  32. Oh MY!!!! This is amazing. You are amazing.

  33. "Holy baking craze, Batman!"

I dub thee the Christmas Baking Queen and your precious younguns your Merry Baking Elves. Your recipe looks like most of mine! Drives the Hubby batty when he helps me in the kitchen...but the results are usually tasty.

  34. Those poor children - kept home to aid and abet their mother in her baking obsessions...

  35. wow, that is really a lot of baking but you love it, and I can tell.

I wanna know ore about those reindeer. what kinda frosting are they covered in? they look awesome and those pictures are cool

    ReplyDelete
  36. I love it! They are absolutely gorgeous! It so reminds me of my childhood.
I swear I am going to join the baking frenzy one of these Christmases. :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Can I just have a teensy weensy lil bite? PPPPPPPLEASE!???!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Impressive!

I think I need to go check my blood sugar level now.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Love the recipe juxtaposed with the label marked cannister, complicated in all the right ways.

Have you ever made candy canes by coloring half the sugar cookie dough red and flavoring it with peppermint then rolling out the dough into snakes twisting red and white into the candy cane pattern, shape, bake then dip part of the cane in chocolate. Yum! Minty chocolaty goodness with only like 17 extra steps...forget I mentioned it ;)

    You're amazing!

  40. Growing up there were ladies in the church who baked like you do. My mom was not one of them and therefore I didn't inherit this gene. I am always jealous of those who have the perseverance and where with all (along with the counter space) to do something like this. More power to ya'.

  42. Looks scrumptious. :) Only thing I ahve done yet for Christmas baking was make and frost a cake. I feel so unworthy now.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Wowsers! Now that's some baking!

    ReplyDelete
  44. If you don't chill the dough, sugar cookie dough is the correct texture to go through a cookie press. It's much faster. :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. YUMMY! :D I absolutely love the last picture in the post as well...great shot! :) GO MOM! We are baking on Friday! YEA!

    ReplyDelete
  46. WOW! Very impressive. I love to bake myself. I made over 10 dozen gingerbread cookies for my managers at work. The trees look so festive. Are they sugar? I might have to copy your design. ;)

    Merry Christmas!

  47. Fabulous darlin! I am planning our baking for this weekend, I've gotten so behind...normally my mom and I would have an assembly line that looks a lot like this. And if it weren't for her resending me the recipes each year, I'd still be scratching my head wondering where I put them last year!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Wow!!! You are AMAZING!! I typically LOVE baking, but this year I'm just not motivated to do it.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I so need a cookie now!

I have tried for years to make sugar cookies but, no matter what recipe I have tried- they just did not come out right. I am sugar cookie baking impaired.
If we are talking cakes, I'm your girl!

  50. You sure can paint a very visual image for us with your words and photos.

Lots of smiling on my face happening here in Australia reading this post.
