Capturing the Elusive Couple Photo...

To look at the photographic record, one would assume that M and I are most likely married to other people and that I myself am a fleeting figure, a quarry to only be photographed during labor and immediately, exhaustedly postpartum. Combing through our huge collection of photographs crammed in boxes and external hard drives, you would be hard pressed to find many more than a handful of images in which M and I appear in the same frame.

I aerobically decided to change that trend on our little getaway.

While hiking on Saturday, I opted to use the self-timer on that great new camera M found out he bought for me surprised me with and put that extra ten-second frame delay to good use.

But it is more dangerous than it looks.

I precariously balanced that expensive new camera on rickety fence posts, propped at hopeful angles, pressed the shutter and then ran like the dickens to meet M several yards down the path...

...and almost knocked us both down as I skidded into M on the leaf-strewn path.

Then there's the danger of reversing the flow on one of the sinus cavities by trying to act all vogue and contemplative while holding in snorting giggles...

Now if I remember correctly, M may have told me something very romantic when I set the timer and ran down the path for this shot...something romantic like, "You're so weird.."...or was it 'odd'?

After putting my camera on rickety fence posts, I decided I hadn't been innovative enough...so I placed my sweet Canon baby on the forest floor, angled the lens with a branch and scurried toward M, hoping I would get something for my trouble.

So there you have it- photographic proof that M and I can occasionally appear in pictures together and that we even can appear in a photograph without Christmas paraphernalia or silly hats on or with multiple other people...provided I am willing to risk camera and limb to get the shot.

  2. Yes, if I had to prove that I belonged to this family, I couldn't. I'm the one always behind the camera and I dare not let my hubby use it, he changes all of my settings then it takes forever to get it back.

But you guys are so gorgeous together, and him, look how handsome he is! I'm a sucker for men with gray hair, LOL, my husband hates that because I don't like for him to wash that gray out of his hair.

  3. All that risky, crazy effort was worth it! The pictures are awesome.

I've learned that since I've entered Mommyville, 9 times out of 10 I am the photographer. If it's not me, it's a proud Nana or Papaw who must shoo everyone out of the shot who isn't an adorably cute grandbaby. We've passed the age of photographability, if that's even a word!

  4. Very impressive, ms. photographer! Definitely worth the risk to the camera...

I must do something like this sometime, too. All photos of me are either taken by my husband or taken by me at arm's length.

  5. Hmmm...he's going gray. I bet that shoe polish trick wouldn't work any more.

  6. At least it's your camera you are risking! I borrowed mum's camera and then balanced it on a not so flat spot on a tree branch hanging over the river... don't tell her that, she still isnt REAL sure how I got those photos...

Your photos are great. Though perhaps hinting that he should buy you a remote to go with the camera he bought you would be a good idea. Then you can skip that nasty aerobic exercise part:)

  7. We're going to do the same to get a family shot this week when we're at the beach. Those are gorgeous photos. I wish I had some of J and I like that. You guys look great.

  8. Those are beautiful!! I feel the same way about John and I in pictures!

  9. Love the pictures. It does seem that the longer you've been married and the more kids one has, there becomes fewer and fewer pics as "just a couple". Glad you had that time together.

  10. What lovely pictures! And what a beautiful place! That's my kind of getaway.

I've been hounding hubby for awhile that we need a few pictures together. I can probably count on one hand number of pics we're in together since we married 11 years ago.

  12. Oh, you guys are so cute!
I am showing my hubby this as a *hint hint*

  13. I hear ya! There are few pictures with me and either of my boys that aren't self-portraits. And those aren't that great, either.

    And your hair is BEAUTIFUL!

  14. Now I get it--you two are married. I always wondered what my son-in-law looked like!My daughter was a real surprise--I remember you as a little girl on a bike.
    Love you.

  15. Lovely. Especially considering the hard work and inginuity it took to get them!

  16. Try getting a pic of just the photographer! For my husband's birthday post, I had to use a shot of him from 1987 that I scanned from his high school reunion name tag.

    You are a gorgeous couple.

  17. Beautiful shots. You have inspired me to get some pictures of me and the hubs!!!

  19. Oh, you're *supposed* to have photogrpahs of you and hubby? Hmmm, all these years of being in photographs seperately...

Seriously, the pictures turned out gorgeous, and I'm happy you have somethign to remember the weekend.:)

  20. The pictures are GREAT!! I may have to try these tricks!

  21. Very cute!

It's the same with my husband and me, too. He's usually the photographer, so we need more pics of him, and of the two of us together. :)

  22. Wow! Totally worth it! Those are gorgeous!

  23. Nice work...with a self-timer. :)

  24. Beautiful pics!! Love the hair color--I think it's the same as mine!!

  25. Lovely photos! It's the same way at our house - pics of the kids and hubs, but none of me. Once I was gone on a women's retreat and hubby called to ask me to text him a photo of me because Chickie Girl was sobbing that she wanted a picture to sleep with. He couldn't find a single photo in the house!

  26. Your pictures are beautiful - but your hair color. Wow, it's stunning.

I like the first picture the best. They are all really good, though. Nice camera. :)

  27. Love the shots. A beautiful couple to prove that, yes, all those gorgeous kids come from a real married couple! I know exactly what you mean about the couple shot. We had our (then 9 year old) eldest son take a picture of us at Disney MGM studios (where we went for part of our honeymoon 14 years ago) and you can barely tell it's us. Do you give photography lessons to children? :o)

  28. So this is love...hmm (Cinderella's love song at the ball.) I love these photos! Such a beautiful way to capture you and the Mr. Priceless works of art. Thanks for sharing these with us!

  29. i love this post! oh yeah- those hugely pregnant photos, and all washed out and wiped out, post partum we've got... there are tons of pix of hubby and the kids, but not so many of me and the little darlings. and fewer yet of me and my other half! we'll have to work on that- thanks for the reminder!

  30. How lovely all of these are! You can truly feel the love. :)

  31. What beautiful Pictures! Makes me want to go take some photos with my hubby....Most pictures of he and I are taken by my kids which means our heads are usually cut off:

  32. These are beautiful pictures! I love the lushness of the forest.

My husband and I don't have any pictures together either. I will make a goal to have someone take pictures this holiday season - even if it is my five year old!

  33. oh my gosh your hair is gorgeous!

    (oh, and nice pics, too)

  34. You two really do look so totally devoted to each other, even if M finds you "odd" at times LOL. So pleased for you to get that time together and the photos are awesome.

    and the last one? WOW!

  36. So great! Did they all turn out perfect or were there some duds? You are a lovely couple!

  37. Beautiful pictures and the location!! You have great hair color and the hubby's isn't bad either. I love a man with graying hair (is that a reflection of my age or what?).

    ReplyDelete
  38. NICE!!! You got some really neat shots, and TOGETHER!!! :-) Thanks for the giggles as I imagined you skidding around to get that PERFECT shot, and snorting in fits of giggles yourself. I think you are a ton of fun! and, maybe we have some silliness in common that draws me to you. I don't know, but I am so glad I found you! :-)

  39. these are awesome. Like from a magazine.

Now I have an idea how to get some shots of Hubby and I, though we wouldn't look like models like you two do!

What stunning photos you took. This is the way I get most of photos of hubby and I while on holidays. I think the worst thing I've balanced the camera on is a rubbish bin - thankfully it didn't fall in. Usually we grin into the camera while the photos you have look professional. Nature really relaxs me too. Our recent holiday was to the mountains and I spent a few ours each morning enjoying the stunning view and praying - thankful for all God's goodness

  41. Clever lady putting the self timer on and setting up these beautiful shots.
What fun the two of you must have had and all that giggling, delightful!

Thanks for sharing these precious moments.

  43. These are just beautiful pictures! I'm quite sure that I would not have been able to pose the shots so creatively while securing the camera, then running to be in the picture. I'm more than impressed!

  44. Awwww.. those are AWESOME shots. What a beautiful trail to walk...

I am always the photographer, and never in photos too - so I can relate... and I'm inspired. Nice job!!

  46. These are just fantastic photos! What a beautiful couple!!!

ps I think I maybe have 5 or 6 photos of Russ and I throughout our marriage that aren't at the birth of a child or adoption. LOL

Hope you have a wonderful holiday!

  47. LOL That is soooooo how I take pictures. I now have a tripod, but where is it? Why, at home, generally...so I'm back to precarious arrangements hehe And yes, I would have to do the same to prove myself a member of this family. Not that I mind so much. I rather prefer THIS side of the camera, but on occasion, will indulge to the other...a rare occasion...arranged by myself :p

  48. Such a great reminder. I, too, am the "chief photographer", so I'm rarely in a shot with our without DH. In fact, today my MIL insisted that we take one for Thanksgiving -- now I'm extra-glad (and hope it turns out nicely.)

  49. You - and all your loyal readers who have similarly risked cameras - need to get a gorillapod! It's a handy little twisty tripod thingy. Search for it online to see what I mean. (No affiliation with the company except as a satisfied customer - although I haven't used it to take artsy couple photos, hmmmm....)
