"Listen! the wind is rising,
and the air is wild with leaves,
We have had our summer evenings,
now for October eves!"
Humbert Wolfe
Autumn (Resignation) (1926)
It runs deep within me, this love of fall. I was born just before Thanksgiving. M and I started dating in the early autumn. My first baby was born in the fall. My third baby was born in the fall.
And while these events in my life do give me a sway toward this season, the last quarter of the year has always drawn me in. Ironically, I didn't spend the majority of my childhood in a wooded neighborhood spectacularly painted in autumn reds and golds and oranges, carpets of fallen leaves flooring the yards. I mainly grew up in the high desert of California. Joshua trees don't change color. The sparse foliage generally stays a desert-camouflage brown. But each year, the nights would become dry and crisp, the Tehachapi Mountains purple on the horizon sprinkled in an early snow fall, and the sky would be released from the summer heat haze to reveal a palette of the most achingly blue heights. Blue, blue, blue against the neutral tones of the desert floor. Cool mornings at the bus stop, blue sky shining in early light, the new year of school still fresh, Pee Chee folders still stiff and unadorned but for their tennis player and track runner pictures. Fall.
Fast forward to the first decade and a half of my marriage, my entre into motherhood to my brood. My years in Northeastern Oklahoma yielded picture post-card fall seasons. Pumpkin patches, homes adorned with hay bales and scarecrows. Hay rides. Forests of trees crowned with a riot of autumn colors. I loved it. We usually hosted Thanksgiving for the family, often holding a triple birthday party alongside for 1 of 8, 3 of 8 and me.
Flip the pages of the family album again and find us celebrating the season seaside, beginning a new journey in a new locale. I found that while I desperately missed the more traditional fall elements of my Oklahoma life, there was a return to looking at autumn skies reminiscent of my childhood. Autumn at the beach features bluer skies, softer sand, better beach combing, long stretches of deserted seashore. I found once again a deep love for the changing golden light of mid-equinox skies, of azure and dun, sand dunes rolling down to green water and sapphire heavens.
And now I celebrate this season in yet another new city, another new region. The temperatures remain warm, the trees still clothed. But the light is gilded, halcyon sunbeams spotlighting clearer firmament. For me, this seems the New Year, this time. Perhaps it is the remembrance of the genesis of the school year, fresh pencils, fresh notebooks. Perhaps it is an appreciation for Rosh Hashanah, the traditional Jewish new year. Perhaps, no matter where I am living, no matter the presence of changing leaves or perennial cactus, the corner pumpkin patch or lack thereof, perhaps it is the spectacular play of light and cerulean that has always followed me in autumn glory, a memory of wave and particle, the planet's yearly rendezvous with this side of the Sun. And that is the one thing I have been able to recognize through the years, regardless of where I may reside.
So what about you? What is your favorite season? Why? And to my international readers, I would love to hear about your seasons and what is traditional during those times. What memories do you have, what 'speaks' that favorite season to you? Is it holidays, traditions, a love of the hot weather, a love of the cold? Feel free to post a comment or to write your own post, coming back here to post the url of your post in the Mister Linky's box. Can't wait to hear what season defines you!

Living in central Texas when I was in high school, the school year always began with 100 degree weather, wearing shorts and t-shirts for as long as you could. So, nothing was better than the day I could finally wear all of the wonderful fall colored clothes my aunt had bought me at the back to school sales they had where she lived up north. She had an eye for fashion that I carry around today. I would poke my head outside, breathe in the crisp air, and inwardly scream, "Yes!" Proudly, I would walk into the music hall of school and unpack my flute and prepare for marching practice - the only student who was prepared for the brisk morning air. I would hurry outside to watch the sun rise over the horizon (yes, our director was a lunatic and we were there at O'dark:30) thankful that fall was FINALLY here and I could enjoy it warmly. Thanks Aunt Rose, for sending me off to school prepared to enjoy the best season of the year.
My favourite is spring. I love those bright clear mornings. I'm big on renewal and transformation!
Fall is my very favorite. Then spring, then winter. Summer is tolerated as long as I have air-conditioning and do not leave my house.
It's all good. I just can't write about it as eloquently as you do.
I absolutely LOVE fall. I love the feel of the crisp days with the bluest skies you can imagine and just a little breeze blowing the leaves everywhere. It makes me feel so wonderful.
I love Winter. December. We married on the 15. Daughter was born the 27. Son came Jan. 1. I get abreak from allergies. I love the snow. The quiet of winter. The promise that everything will be new again. And of course Christmas. It's nonstop celebrating.
Fall! Fall! Fall!
It's the only season where I wouldn't want to live anywhere else but on the farm...
Fall! Yum.
I remember one October day, I must've been about 13...the dad of the family I babysat for came to pick me up at my house, and he commented on the beautiful autumn weather, and I said to him "I'm going to get married and have all my kids in October." He said, "well, the marriage thing would probably work out pretty easily, but to have all your kids in October?...that'll take some planning."
My husband and I got married in spring.
But it was a beautiful day.
I met my husband in fall, five years ago!
His birthday is in late late fall, practically winter.
There's still hope for fall babies!
I've loved fall in each region that I've experienced it...back home in the midwest, in Oregon and Washington, and even the desert southwest.
My only complaint is that it's too short!
Sigh. I adore fall. Absolutely adore it. It's not too hot, not too cold, and the colors are simply gorgeous here in Upstate NY.
I love living in an area where the seasons scream their arrival. I can do without the five months of snow but when I look out my window and see our backyard drenched in golds and reds and oranges and yellow ... it's worth it.
Gosh, I am loving Fall because everyone's joy over it is so contagious and since we live in FL, the cool breeze is so welcoming. I can't wait to just wear a pair of jeans & a lightweight long sleeve cotton shirt & just sit outside with a cup of coffee. Also, October brings my bday, Halloween which my son loves and the holidays where family from different states come together for good food & company. Can't beat it.
Not to be too Pollyanna-ish, but I do love things about each season. That being said, my favorites are fall and summer. LOVE LOVE LOVE them both.
Well, living in New England, you will see plenty of fall photos on my blog. I can't help it -- it really is my favorite season. I also love winter, but all the seasons are beautiful here. (If you hate winter, though, I DO NOT recommend dark, snowy, frigid NH, LOL.)
I love fall for its cool, crisp air. For the saturated hues of reds, oranges, and golds that greet me on my drives. I love wearing real clothes again....! Not capris, not sandals, but long sleeves and pants and the requisite socks that envelope my school-teacher feet in their warmth and softness! (Pretty socks I might add....!)
But then... after the colder days of winter, I look forward to experiencing the sounds and sights of spring. The grass loses its dull shade and becomes vivid green again. Birds that had flown further south are waking me up with their song, and the blooms of the flowers and trees urge me to take out my camera and capture the beautiful images of springtime.
And then there's summer ....
I just recently posted about my favorite season, autumn. My post is nowhere near as eloquent as yours, but having grown up in Western Mass, my feelings and memories of fall best mirror the experiences you had in Oklahoma.
I feel like September 1st is more of a fresh start to life than January 1st. My husband having finished graduate school after #1 started kindergarten (and my dad having finished grad school when I was in 3rd grade) I have never had a fall without beginning a new school year as well.
Autumn is an exciting time, and to me, better than the others combined.
The older I get, the more excited I am for spring. Fall is gorgeous, delicious, a feast for the senses. The colors, foods, textures, scents can be overwhelming and rich.
But spring? Like I said, in the past two or three years, I find myself growing more and more fond of spring to the point I believe it is surpassing fall in my heart. I swoon over blossom-covered trees. I love the first blades of green grass and seeing the birds back on the lawn. Especially robins. This year, we had a robin build a nest about four feet off the ground in our backyard. The four blue eggs captivated me, as did the little birds (who didn't survive the stupid nest location). It's life, fresh---a promise fulfilled and bordering on the spiritual for me.
Missed you over the past few days... sorry. Life got in the way of my blogging. It's been crazy. Anyway. I love autumn, and I've always lived in an area that had the traditional colors and temps that we think of with autumn... until now. Until Atlanta. I do miss it very much. It's still there, but delayed and very short. I have to bring my kids to the pumpkin patch in scathing 80 degree weather!
Mom, do you speak as you write? For I wilt not be able to so incline myself to spake upon the words as such that you do that I might make upon myself a verbial fool.
You write beautifully.
Please tell me you speak:
I said NO!
Because I'm OCTAMOM. THAT's why!
Go to your room!
Amen!
Please?
Oh, Post Script: I take upon myself the utmost splendor of all things created by Our Heavenly Father in those seasons upon which we would name them autumnal in their time.
Yeah. That and spring. And the first months of winter and summer.
The End.
I love Fall best. I love going out with a sweater but not a coat. The cool air that helps you breathe! The colors that surround. I love wearing Fall clothes and colors. I love food with Fall spices...pumpkin spice lattes!! Lighting candles and covering up with an afghan to watch tv or read a book. I love smores, hot cocoa or cider, popcorn balls and pumpkin bread. I do love Fall!
Just the fact that when I log on to your blog and see your template, I get as giddy as a school girl. I check the fall box. Love, Love it!!
I love Autumn. Winter is nice with all the snow, but the skies are darker earlier, so it feels a bit sad. Spring is melted snow mixed with dirt and mud, so it's not very pleasant to trudge through. Summer is just plain too hot.
Autumn is perfect. Cool air, colourful leaves, an air of festivities {pre-christmas feelings} and many, many events in our family. We have 6 family birthdays alone in the fall, so much celebration gets done during this time. :)
Fall? We have a wet season and a dry season. Also known as Summer and The-Other-Summer. I got to visit Romania in autumn, just as the trees were turning. I did love looking outside each morning to see a different colour on the trees! Our trees are green all year and never drop a leaf unless you forget to water them. However if I lived further south I do think Autumn would be my favourite!
I'm with you, I love this season, but never could I paint it so beautifully. What a nice picture book you've created through the years!
I love fall! I love the leaves changing colors and the fresh crispness that comes with the changing air quality here, haha.
I loved your descriptions! I do love fall but I find that as each new seasons dawns I love that season. I love each season for what it gives!!!!
Happy Fall!!!
Ahh fall is so unbelieveable, especially in the hamptons, we have wonderful pumpkin patches and farms. I went to school in New England and can relate to your descriptions. Love it!! However, I will have to say it's a toss up between Fall and late Spring. There is nothing better then seeing the flowers and tress come to life after a long hard winter. Oh and walking barefoot through the sand for the first time of the season. Each Spring I always say "Spring is my fav" and each fall I say "Fall is my fav" So it's a toss up for me but Loved your post and your descriptions!!
I love the candy corn! Your blog design gets me excited about fall!
Fall ~ I live in Pa, and use to live in New England, so Fall and all it's beauty is my favorite season. I was married outside under a tree 5 years ago on October 3rd. I just blogged about my family's fall fun. Fall is even more special for me now that I have a toddler who just loves crushing the leaves, trying so hard to pick up heavy pumpkins, and just enjoyed his first hay ride :)
I like late fall/early winter. After the first hard frost, when all the blooming things have died off, I can finally breathe without multiple allergy and asthma medicines.
