A Little Fosse, Anyone?

I wasn't raised a dancer. Didn't take dance classes, didn't study it as an art form, didn't don a leotard and join in the discipline.

But, oh my, have I raised some dancers.

Kids 1 thru 6 have all taken dance and I'm assuming 7 and 8 will follow suit. Each of them has experienced their own take on the art form. And I have loved learning about a discipline that I have always admired but have known little about (pardon my dangling participle...).

2 of 8 is our strongest devotee to the dance. She is loving the experience of training not only in the ballet forms of Royal Ballet and Vaganova but also in the discipline of Cecchetti. She has been very blessed to have instructors who have received extensive training in these forms and recently made another discovery;  one of her teachers actually trained with Bob Fosse, famous theatrical choreographer and jazz dancer.  2 of 8 has very enthusiastically picked up a top hat and toy trumpet to begin learning the Fosse style.

2 of 8 was thrilled to have attended a recent Cecchetti conference here in our city, taking her next level of exams and also being able to take a Fosse-based class from her instructor who worked with Fosse.  It's such an amazing thing to see a kid take a cute little hobby, a thing they enjoy, and begin to turn it into a product of beauty, discipline and grace.  When I see 2 of 8 perform, I can still visualize the chubby little three year old who first danced on-stage in a puffy baby blue costume, squeezable baby legs encased in bright pink tights.  But in seeing the little girl of my memory, I now overlay it with the vision of the young woman she is now, daughter, student, athlete, dancer, artist.

And it is just a delight.

  2. Beautiful pictures, as usual! My daughters took dance up until this past June when their studio went out of business. We miss it! I'm going to start them somewhere else after Christmas.

  3. it is amazing to see how God uses every aspect of our lives... to see what He grows out of it... She is beautiful! and... you are a special woman, Octamom, and not just because you are a mom of eight. God must had giggled Himself when you were born, when you entered childhood, your preteens and teens, into young adulthood, and big adulthood, and then into life as a wife and Mother. He knew the lessons you would learn, the trials you would face and how to hone your humor, perspective, hopes, and everything else so you would be here... watching your daughter do just that, journey into adulthood so that she herself could be used by her Maker to do wonderful things as well. It is an amazing circle...

  4. She's beautiful. I often wonder what my twins will pick up and get interested in as older kids. It must be really cool to see that happen. We haven't done dance yet-I'm still running after them in gymnastics! You must be so proud of her-she's really so beautiful, and graceful-just in the way she holds her hands.

  5. How wonderful. It's always amazing to see someone stick with an art form or sport (and I place dance in both categories) long enough to be a proficient, to have a true developed talent in the area. How thankful you must be to have witnessed that in your child.

(Dangling participle. As if most people would even notice. You crack me up. I saw a t-shirt the other day which read: "I am the grammarian about whom your mother warned you." Not necessarily me, but I can certainly appreciate the sentiment!)

  6. Great pictures- I especially love the last 2! My oldest is only 6, but she's my little ballerina and I am so glad that she has "taken" to it. This is her 4th year of dance, already! Looking back- I think I started her too soon (right when she turned 3!)- but I was so eager to see if she'd like it. And now- just a few years later- I see her really loving it and it just melts my heart to watch her dance. It's such a beautiful form of art.

  7. Wow. I wish I could see a performance. I think it's wonderful that she enjoys something so much that IS work but sees the beauty and grace and creativity that accompanies the discipline.

  8. This brings me back to when I was in dance. What great memories I have, and I'm sure your children have and will continue to enjoy!

Oh and I loved the acknowledgement of the dangling participle. Cute!

  14. I have always pretended that I'm a dancer. But only in private and in my head. In my head I am REALLY good at it. In reality, not so much. I love it that you have so many dancers in your family. Beautiful photos (again) I'll try to stop saying that soon. I can't stop. So I take that back. I'll keep saying it.

  18. How did you get your boys to take dance? Our 5 oldest go to a children's prayer watch on Fri. nights at the House of Prayer and my 9-yr-old doesn't want to go because part of it is worship dance. I've watched. He's actually pretty good. What's with the attitude? Your daughter is stunning, and so lucky to have parents that support and invest in developing her gift. I can hardly wait to see what mine grow on to do... ;)

  19. She's so beautiful! I wish I could get my kids interested in a hobby. But we are so busy I don't know where I'd find the time to get them there.

But Kudos for her for sticking with it!

  20. Pookie is our dancer - she's got moves I've never seen on a 7 year-old before. Do you have any advice regarding studios? We were at the safe, familiar YMCA for 4 years and recently transitioned to a professional studio, but I'm not convinced it's the place for her. Any wisdom would be greatly appreciated!

  21. My little almost-2-year-old was fascinated by your pictures -- a dancer in the making? LOL. We haven't really gotten into that arena, but I do have a few girls who would probably love it. Your daughter is beautiful!

  22. I loved dance growing up. I still like to think I can dance every once in a while, my son though just looks at me like I'm crazy when I try to bust a move. Teeheehee. So glad she enjoys it so much.
