I'm often asked about various parenting techniques we use with our brood. Hopefully over the course of our experience of the last eighteen years, we've picked up a few useful items along the way.
Using a hybrid of sign language with babies has certainly come into vogue over the last few years. Proponents of baby signing believe that giving babies an ability to communicate needs through the venue of signs can lead to earlier communication and less frustration on the part of baby. Baby signs can be used before the child has developed verbal language.
Do we use baby signs? Well, yes. However, we have chosen to develop our own version of it, one that also takes into account the communicative ability of facial expressions as well as repetitive oral sounds. Through careful study and years of experience, we have honed our interpretive abilities and feel somewhat expert in understanding this grouping of signs and early language. I offer the following photographic menu along with the accompanying interpretations.
Here is the Baby Sign for 'Get Me Out of This High Chair Now'...

Be careful not to confuse it with the more subtle sign, pictured here, which means, 'You are Going to Have a Heck of a Diaper to Change in About Five Minutes'...

And here is the sign for 'You Should Have Gotten Me out of This High Chair Five Minutes Ago Instead of Getting the Camera' (we have chosen to use highly specialized baby signs...)

Now, this is the baby sign for 'I Believe in Chocolate Milk'...

And this is the closely associated sign, 'I Love the Camera'...

And this would be the sign, usually only seen with multiples, that means 'I'm Being the Easy Baby Today as Compared With My Screaming Twin'...

Now, this next collection of signs is very subtle, very difficult to interpret as a new parent. Don't fret if you're not able to pick up on these faint signals...with time, you will be able to decode these effectively...
This is the sign for 'I'm Done With My Scrambled Eggs'...

Yes, I know, I know, this one is tough to read. Let me include another shot so that maybe you can begin to recognize what is being communicated here...

Hope this has been helpful as you look for ways to understand what your baby is trying to tell you. I'll be sure and post more of our baby signs. Just trying to serve the greater good, you know....
That is too funny. I seem to remember some of those signs, maybe a slightly different facial expression, but definitely some of those signs.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day.
Hahaha yes those sure are some very clear signs.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness for Easy Baby when they happen. I sure hope you have a dog. That was a great help in our high chair days!
ReplyDeleteLove the baby signs!! I have been sick with a head cold for 3 weeks now--it sucks!!
ReplyDeleteWe do signs language/ facial expressions/ verbal expression/ multi-language!!!! Let me tell ya our daughter has a lot to say and she will communicate in all ways if she needs too LOL
ReplyDeleteShe is 17 1/2 months speak a few French and English word and will sign those word at the same time so we often see and here
"Food, please, S'il vous plais, Mmmmm!hmmmmmh and singing please"
It so funny!
Ps she loves food so her communication skill goes around anything that is related to it!!!
I hope you get to feeling better!!
ReplyDeleteLove the pictures!! Our floor looks like that more often that I care to know... don't feel bad. LOL
You know, we use those same signs!! Especially the "I'm done with this food" sign...also associated with the "I'm done with this sippy and fork."
ReplyDeleteThis was really funny. I'm so glad I found your blog!
Oh, I totally recognize those signs :) Our latest one from our 15 month old is a uh.uh.uh.uh sound as he backs up close to someone....if you don't pick him up when makes contact -- he falls on the floor crying. Wow. Communication is not a problem! Or I guess others would say it is a BIG one! LOL!
ReplyDeleteI just crack up every time a new Mom gives me the big lecture about how I should be doing baby sign language. Can you new moms really not understand when your baby hands you his empty cup that he wants some more?
ReplyDeleteCommunication is key!
ReplyDeleteLOL. This is too funny. You had me cracking up. Words + pics = FUNNY!!!
ReplyDeleteVery funny! You know we used sign language with our twins, and Little Man actually still signs along with speaking! (Sadly, we had the scrambled eggs sign as well...)
ReplyDeleteCOL(cackle out loud) love the hint that new parents just might not catch that huge indicator.
ReplyDeleteyou are too funny! aren't you glad you have the easy twin today?
too cute.
oh and yesterday you got an award. on my blog. come and get it.
Perhaps you could indulge us with pictures of the "I'm loopy and just responded multiple times to your comment" sign.
ReplyDeleteCute babies!
Heal up soon, dearie.
Cute... I guess there is always an easy one and a difficult one... Bless your heart- very much!
ReplyDeleteHope you are feeling better hon' :)
ReplyDeleteLove the pics of 7 and 8 they are soooo cute. Love the signs they give you...bet the i'm tired one is a cracker :)
Wow are you a hip mom, teaching your kids those signs! I'm soooooo impressed. :)
ReplyDeleteOut of all my kids' signs, the red-faced grunting one that indicated a dirty diaper was imminent was my favorite.
Lol, Blue Castle. The red-faced grunting was usually followed by a perfect crouch for most of our kids. ;)
ReplyDeleteOctamom, wonderful post once again. :) Thank you for sharing!
those eyes!!! wow - she is just so expressive!!
ReplyDeleteYou have a wonderful way of brightening my day. Thanks so much! That's one cute baby!
ReplyDeletejudy
Heh! You know, I think my son developed a sign for "Stop taking pictures of me and put that camera away" :)
ReplyDeleteI love that their highchairs and your floor look like mine do after any meal at my house.
ReplyDeleteI so love that chocolate milk one!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to dig into my stash ... I know we used this kind of language when our kids were little and I'm pretty sure I've got a classic example of "I do not do bibs" and "You can run but you can't hide, my projectile vomiting will find you anywhere."
I hope you feel better soon!
We have the I'm done with the eggs, the peas, the whole dinner before I even started signs here a lot. I just wish they'd sign without throwing :) get better soon!
ReplyDeleteFine tuned signs for sure. I LOVE your humor, and hope you feel better soon!
ReplyDeleteI was wondering where this was going and then of course true to form Octamom has a twist planned...when I see your baby girl of 8 I always think of 6 of 8 because this is the age I was around her. Isn't that weird? Do you think they look alike?
ReplyDeleteHa! I'll have to keep those in mind.
ReplyDeleteYou are so creative. I'll bet you are a wonderful teacher, too. Your kids are so lucky to have such a fun, imaginative mom!!!!!
ReplyDeleteNow I have all the answers! thank you
ReplyDeleteWe did baby signs at our house too...and I recognized a few of those signs! Cute.
ReplyDeleteCute! We only did a few signs with Alex, that was mostly because I was too cheap to buy the book. Heehee, my flaw, I will squeeze a penny until it screams.
ReplyDeleteadorable! my son knows some of those same signs, especially "I'm done with my scrambled eggs..." :)
ReplyDeleteI love it!!! Too cute. You always make me laugh.
