I'm the Favorite Daughter-In-Law...

I am the favorite daughter-in-law...just ask my mother-in-law, MiMi.

It has nothing to do with the fact that I am her only daughter-in-law.

I'm pretty sure.

The deal was officially sealed last year.  It took over a decade and a half to make sure that I had secured the crown of Favorite, but Spring of '07 was my year, my season, my culmination of all the things the Favorite crown bestowed.

Because that was the year I got twins for MiMi.

My father-in-law has twin brothers.  MiMi had always hoped that she might produce another set for the family.  But first she had my M and then she had my ridiculously organized and disciplined and motivated sister-in-law A.  And then the production line  was shut down.

So hopes were pinned on the next generation, that a return to things multiple might occur again.  When I was pregnant with our first child, I ballooned up like I was carrying a litter.  Ultrasounds were ordered, dates were checked and MiMi whispered her mantra: "Twins, twins, twins."

Nope.

Just one big baby.

And then a few years later, another singleton.  And so on.  And so on.

I figured since all the genetic donation on my in-laws part had been instilled in their children and not in my DNA sequence, my sis-in-law might be the one to fulfill MiMi's wish.  But as A's first pregnancy progressed, I didn't hold out much hope for 20 fingers and 20 toes.  A's perfectly honed abs held in her little preggo tummy with the utmost of discipline.  Right before A delivered my niece, her tummy looked like she might have eaten one slice of pizza too many...if she turned sideways and arched her back.  Yeah, one of those kind of pregnant people.  She delivered my niece and put on her starched tiny jeans and came home from the hospital.

More grandchildren blessed MiMi's grandma status through the years.  A went on to deliver two more kiddos to the brood, one at a time.  I got up to a half dozen, all one at a time.  I figured that if anybody was going to bring it on home, it was A's turn.  Surely at six kiddos on my part, I had fulfilled my end of the daughter-in-law contract.  But then A underwent some health problems and had her gall bladder yanked out and had other parts shifted around and edited and declared herself done with the gestation thing.

And so MiMi's wish lay fallow.

For a month.

And as M always says, spontaneity causes people.

And in our case, two.

So MiMi got her twins.  She has a gentle, darling, sweet history of pretty much getting her way.  She's got some kind of superpower that just makes you want to make her happy and have her shed copious happy tears and  hear her declare that we are 'making memories.'  I'd pretty much do anything for her...even develop stretch marks on top of stretch marks while carrying a couple of kids in utero.  I just want to make sure I've sealed the Favorite Daughter-In-Law deal.

Because I really want to avoid some dark horse swimsuit compeition....

  1. How stinking funny. And you were worried why? You seem like such a sweet person/daughter-in-law any MIL would be proud to call her own.

  2. *Sniff* That is so sweet! My mother-in-law is not fond of me AT ALL, so I am envious. Maybe if I had produced twins, she'd have liked me. LOL

  3. With every pregnancy, I would walk into my first ultrasound chanting, "twins, twins".
And I really have no idea why, I guess I just thought it would be neat.

  6. Those are beautiful photos of Mimi and 7 and 8. Beautiful! Also very sweet. A story-J's Grandma was so sure we'd have twins that she knitted 2 baby blankets before she died-before we got pregnant! I somehow think it was her having a talk with God up there! Very sweet! Did I tell you that I read some of your posts to J?

  8. omgosh, I love reading your posts. I'm a twin (I have a twin brother) and I so hoped for twins, but it was not to be.

And I have to admit, your relationship with your MIL makes me wistful. I like my MIL but we'll never be close. And my extended in-law family? Sigh. I always wanted a big family, lots of kids, lots of inlaws that I loved and who loved me, yada yada yada. Again, not to be.

I'm always wondering if God got my DNA mixed up with somebody else's.

P.S.: I'll have to brush up on the Venus Butterfly ... I wonder if Stuart and Anne wrote a how-to book?

  19. I was always scared to death it would be twins. Especially the 7th pregnancy. I probably would have lost what little of my mind is left. You are doing a great job, each child is a treasure that you absolutely value. You are so lucky to have in-laws who support and love you. I have a great, loving MIL too, but I know she really does not relate to the big family thing. She can really only handle being around 2, maybe 3 at a time. She gets over-whelmed by the clan. But, I am blessed by her all the time. I, myself, also happen to be a favorite DIL! ;)

By the way, I did a post the other day on how many kids do you want? I linked it back to your is 8 enough, but couldn't get the Mr. Linky to work.

  27. My husband calls himself my mothers favorite son .. she lovingly tells him that he can't be since he makes six sons for her .. but if he wants to be the favorite, it's the favorite son-in-law. Oh the turf wars when my sisters finally hitch up ;o)

Your mother-in-law is darling .. and those pictures are gorgeous! Looks like you are having a lovely visit! What's a couple (hundred in my case) stretch marks in return for happiness and love? :o)

It just so happens that _I'm_ the favorite daughter-in-law, too! I have two others to compete with, but I'm the fave! It's all in my head! But that goes a long way!

  33. I can totally relate to this, but in a different vein. My deal was sealed when I had a red-headed son. My mom also has red hair, had no red-haired children, and he was the first and is still the only red-headed grandchild. She couldn't be prouder of him... or ME! LOL

  34. Love the pictures!! Twins are so neat! We always were open to twins but only single births here...my ob is always shocked that I haven't had twins....this last time he said 10th pregnancy, and your age .....very possible...but nah...just one little adorable baby girl...the Lord knows what I can handle and I suppose for me its One at a time...lol

CONGRATS ON YOUR FAVORITE DAUGHTER IN LAW STATUS!!! :)

  39. I honestly don't know whether to laugh or cry. That was just too stinkin' funny and really really sweet. I get SO jealous when I hear their kids have grandma's in their lives who just adore them and want to spend as much time with them as possible (my MIL does too...only she lives 12 hrs away!). Very very excellent post. Probably one of my top 10.
